Bad therapist?

Postby ConfusedKitty » Mon Apr 27, 2015 7:34 pm

Hi guys,

I feel like I'm posting all over the place! I really just wanted some advice about a therapist I have been seeing since January. He was recommended by a distant relative of my partners so we decided to go see him (I've had ongoing mental health problems since childhood including depression and anxiety). Initially I thought, after having so many bad therapists, he could potentially be the one to help. I dont know if I only felt that because he seems like a nice person but that's just how I felt. Recently however i've been really questioning how competent he is. For example:

1. He's answered his phone twice during a session (we see him in his home office). I wouldn't have minded if he had told us before the session started that he would need to be available to answer calls because of an emergency but it was literally "Hello...no he's not here right now. Okay, thank you, bye".

2. He told us he was going on a two week break and that after this time we should contact him for another appointment. It's been 5 weeks during which we called him 3 times and sent 2 emails as we were concerned something had happened (keeping in mind that I've been very suicidal recently and a sudden disappearance hasn't helped) and he just called us back today saying he was working on a publication and was not seeing clients but now is. He clearly ignored our emails and calls.

3. I don't look at him very much during the session but my partner said he looks quite sleepy a lot of the time. At first I just shrugged this off as his default expression but in light of everything else I'm starting to wonder...

4. I feel like sometimes we only talk about really trivial things like he'll ask what I'm currently reading when I've been in crisis and that's not really what I expect to talk about.

5. He made a little bit of a snappy comment to my partner saying that he shouldn't be going on holiday when I'm in crisis. I organized the holiday for my partner last year and it was non-refundable, it was also for three days.

Yes, get another one.

Number 2 is flat out unacceptable

Number 4 is what I consider to be very sloppy practice. It is something that I actively try to avoid during an appointment because it is too distracting for me (my own mental fatigue doesn't allow too many subjects to be discussed or I may end up not saying something I wanted to.)

Number 3----I had a psychologist who always appeared stoned and totally aloof. She misdiagnosed me and was later fired. For some reason her bad diagnosis is still listed on my medical records and doctors take it into account while seeing me despite it being totally irrelevant.

Thank you for replying and for confirming my fears. I was starting to worry that I was just a 'needy' client but I also kept thinking that he's not acting very appropriately.
