Hi, I have a question for all of you. My son has Major Depressive Disorder. He really wants to die. The hospital put him on a 5150 hold. Now my son says he's going to lie to the doctor and say that he is not depressed in the hopes that the doctor will let him out so he can kill himself. My son doesn't participate in group therapy. He lies in bed in the hospital all day, too depressed and angry to do anything. Will the doctors believe his lie and just let him go? Or will they see his behavior and know he needs help? I don't know what to do. I'm so worried. The doctors won't talk to me because my son is grown and won't let me speak with them.

I'd imagine that the staff have heard many variations on that lie. So if he isn't participating in therapy. Or is even able to get up and do much. I think he'll find it very hard to convince them that he's fit to be released. Especially if the 5150 came about from a suicide attempt or MDD related behaviour.
It might be worth talking to a lawyer just to see if there are any other options. Or if there are any family advocacy groups near you. People who've either been in your son's situation. Or have had relatives go through it. As there may be some process for submitting this kind of feedback. I can understand the doctors not disclosing confidential information to you. But passing information to them doesn't seem like it's covered in the same way.

More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.”
