Medication Emotional Numbness?

Postby gabbygabby12 » Thu Jun 26, 2014 4:21 pm

*originally posted on bipolar forum, but thought you all could help me:)

My recently increased dose of medication makes it hard for me to feel emotions. I hope I am not incorrect in assuming that some of you have had similar medication experiences, so maybe we can share tips?

So far what has worked:
-getting piercings
-reading books (feel through others)
-watching sad movies

Any recs?!
Thanks

Music can work quite well, I think. For more subtle emotions perhaps.
We think too much and feel too little.
More than machinery, we need humanity.
More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.

gabbygabby12, emotional numbness or apathy is quite common in people who are on psychotropic medication. I guess it depends on how the body deals with the medication(s). Positive upbeat music can boost mood, well it does in me at least, and going for long walks can also be of benefit to your mood. I love the countryside the most. Taking up a hobby like writing poetry can be an outlet for how you feel - or don't feel in this case. Deep down you do have an array of emotions but the medications you're taking are affecting the chemicals in your brain which is thus causing this numbness. It may just take more time for the medications to kick in to their full effect before the numbness subsides or you may need to see your doctor about getting new meds.
