Has anyone lost their feelings after going off citalopram?

Postby djh101 » Thu Jun 05, 2014 4:52 am

A little about myself:
I had some depression issues during high school. I was on citalopram for maybe half a year at age 15-16. I am 20 now and, although I am quite content with life, have not really had actual feelings in quite some time. I am usually at ease (i.e. carefree and content) but do not experience joy/excitement/happiness as other people do (or as I did when I was young). I don't really get angry and I cannot feel sadness or love.

Anyway, it occurred to me very recently that I stopped feeling around the same time as my experience with citalopram. So, on to my question- has anyone else experienced a permanent loss of feelings after citalopram?

I did take citalopram for a while, though that must have been about 9/10 years ago now. As is the case with antidepressants, some work, some don't. Citalopram didn't work for me so I didn't take it for very long. So I am probably not the right person to answer your question.

One thing that did occur to me though. Is it possible that what you're dealing with is not the effects of citalopram? Is it possible that what you're feeling might just be depression? Maybe not as severe as the depression you suffered when you were younger? It's just that a lot of what you describe, the loss of feelings is something that can come from depression.

Do you think it might be an idea to have a chat to a doctor about all of this? Because they might be able to help or at least give you an opportunity to discuss your concerns about the Citalopram.

Although I don't experience complex positive emotions, I am very content with life and in general (to put things in a graphical form, I'm a flat line a little above zero while a normal person would probably oscillate around zero with lots of peaks and dips), so I wouldn't really describe myself as being depressed. Unless, of course, depression killed my feelings (or locked them away in a box somewhere) and then went away and took the key along. I suppose that might also explain the apparent correlation.

I haven't been to a doctor since I was 16. I may consider visiting one in the future, if only to figure out why I am the way I am.
