Celexa (citalopram) and suicidal thoughts

Postby me2 » Fri Jun 30, 2006 12:28 am

Has anyone used this antidepressant? Was wondering if it worked without too many side effects. I increased the dose today and felt really jittery all morning. Has this happened to anyone else?

Has anyone had suicidal thoughts when taking an antideressant? I wasn't suicidal before taking the Celexa but when a plate broke I looked at the piece that broke off and thought about cutting my wrist. I have never felt like this before. Has this happened to anyone else before?

Any info would be helpful. Thanks

I have not experienced this but if you have never had these thought before and are now getting them then I suggest that you talk to a doctor imediately about changing your medication. Im not sure how old you are but I know there has been a lot of teens who have been becoming suicidal from anti-depressents. Not to scare you but many have actually gone through with it. If this med is making you think this way then its probably not the write one for you and you should probably try something different. I hope things work out for you.
Take care,

Hey,
I tried Celexa with Prozac awhile ago, and I switched medication, because I also noticed a lot of strange side-effects...I was also jittery, along with a lot of nausea. I didn't feel suicidal, but I definetely think Kayty's right- it sounds risky, so you should definetely talk to your psychiatrist! It's not worth taking it at all if it's making u feel so uncomfortable.
Good luck!!!!

It says on commercials that it may increase suicidal thoughts in children under 18

the drug is newer, so all the side effects and age groups effected by what is still being sorted out

Anyway, tell your psych or doctor right away.

Thanks for the advice. I am not a teenager, I'm closer to 40 then 20. It is a weird feeling, not really suicidal more of a outsider lookling in and seeing this happen. Would a doctor think that I am suicidal and worry enough about me hurting myself if I told him this? I don't want to end up on the psych ward. I don't think I would ever do anything to hurt myself. Too much to lose.

I have never been on any meds before so I wasn't sure if this feeling was because of the meds or not. I am seeing my family Dr. next week. Maybe I'll say I'm having wierd dreams rather then suicidal thoughts. Don't want to be on the psych floor. Not sure if that would be enough to admit someone involentarly. A freind was committed to there and it kinda has me freaked out that I will end up there too.

I dont think you would end up in the hospital. I think that if you tell them that these feelings just started when you started the medication then he will just believe that it is the medication and switch you to something else. Im sure he wont throw you in a hospital for this. I hope things work out.

I feel better now. It was the weirdest feeling. I am just glad the urge to hurt myself is gone now. It was worse when I increased the doseage. I hope that feeling never comes back. It scared me, like I almost had no choice in the matter, I was going to do it. I will tell my family doc how I felt. Since I don't feel that way anymore I am not so worried about having to go to the hospital.

He might asks me if I want to try a different antidepressant or keep using the same one. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I know that he mentioned using either the celexa or effexer before he decided on celexa. Anyone used effexer. Or any other drug that has been working well?

Thanks everyone for the advice so far. It is nice to know there are people who understand.

Hey,
I actually just started on Effexor like a week ago! lol. It seems to be working well for me so far, without any side-effects that I'm aware of. Before I started it, I actually started a thread on the Depression forum, titled Effexor...You might wanna check it out: a lot of ppl replied w/ their input.
Good luck!!!!

I think all antidepressiants act differently for each person. I was on effexor for months with no changes. Prozac made me think about killing myself. Celexa has been wonderful for me. This isn't a exact science. Drs. can only give us the med and see if it works for us. They can't guarantee it will and need our feedback to know what its doing for us.
Your Dr. won't put you in the hospital if you are having thoughts, only if you intend and plan to hurt yourself or others. He needs your honest input to help you get better.
I didn't choose Depression, it chose me. It will not beat me, I will win over it.
