Jokes bring me down?

Postby Lady Mondegreen » Thu Oct 31, 2013 8:30 pm

People around me constantly make jokes about me being negative/cranky/bitter, and it really brings me down because it's not something I can help, it's part of the disorder. I wish I could make them understand how much it hurts.

Hey,

I get this too but its not so much jokes, more annoyance.

Have you tried to explain to them that you can't help it? I know it's not an easy thing to do tho and tbh depending on the person/people you are talking to, they still might not understand. Depression is such a hard illness to understand unless you've been there.
Do you think you could ask them to just stop making jokes because it's upsetting you?

Sorry I couldn't offer any more advice. I hope you can come up with something that helps.

Thank you for replying! I've thought about just kindly asking the person to stop, but I wonder if it might work. I guess it won't hurt to try.
Most people don't know I have depression. It's very hard to disclose it, and it gets worse when you hear someone you know saying that depression isn't a real illness, that people get depressed because they have nothing better to do and they just need to work and snap out of it (I'm sure everyone here has heard a fair share of that stuff).
I don't know what you exactly mean by annoyance, but I get annoyance, too. Like, I'll say I'm feeling down and it's like "what? again? why?" Is it like that for you?
