Charity vs Private vs NHS psychotherapy

Postby Bozz » Fri May 03, 2013 10:04 pm

[edit: obviously this is just a UK post!!] :)

Hi guys
I am interested to know your opinions and experiences with the above 3 theraputic/councilling services.

I have had Cognitive Behavioural therapy on the NHS which taught me a few thought-process techniques, but unfortunately it was only a 6 week course, and yet again (the 3rd time) I have fallen into the path of feeling severly depressed. I have recently organised a meeting with a charity councilling service which is a 12 week course.

Have people had better results when paying privately? Are there any differences between the 3 types of service provided?

Eager to hear your thoughts/stories.

There's a sticky in the HPD forum that explains a little bit about therapy. You'll need to disregard the fact that the post is written for people with HPD, obviously. The info about what to expect from therapy can apply to anyone.

I also live in the UK, and know about the limitations of services there.

CBT can be effective, but it's usually time limited, and is very much solution focused. It doesn't touch upon the deeper issues that may be behind some types of depression.

Therapy that allows you to talk in some depth about any issues that you may have, and to talk about any events from your past that may have impacted upon you can really help you to get to the root of your issues. Twelve weeks is better than six weeks, and you may be fortunate enough for your therapist to extend the sessions if this is what's needed. You may wish to ask him or her if they'd be willing to do this.

Please ensure that your therapist holds a recognisable qualification such as the CPCAB (to at least Level 4) or similar, and that he or she is adequately insured, and has regular supervision. Due to a lack of regulation in the UK some therapists are not adequately qualified or police checked, so it's important that you can check their credentials. If they belong to an organisation such as the BACP, so much the better. If they're also an Accredited Member of the BACP, then this will mean that they're highly experienced.

A private therapist isn't necessarily better than one who works for an agency. It's highly likely that their qualifications will be very similar.
