Weight gain has been reported as an adverse effect of all of the SSRIs, paroxetine included.

Only go "cold turkey" from an SSRI if you have been on it for less than 4 weeks else you are likely to experience a type of withdrawal with a range of unpleasant symptoms including a temporary worsening of your mood and a type of parasthesia colloquially termed "brain zaps" where you feel like you are getting a weak electric shock on your head whenever you move it. If you have been on paroxetine for more than 4 weeks then I advise that you should taper down the dosage. Use a pill splitter and halve and quarter the tablets. The tapering schedule depends on your current dosage and your sensitivity to the effects of discontinuation so I can't advise a generic tapering schedule.

Get a second opinion with your pharmacist. They're the medicine experts and know how to safely come off the medication. Even if he tells you the same as the psychiatrist, it's a better bet than asking people here
Blame it on me, but know that I won't regret one iota.

I would echo ladyswan on this, it is unusual for a doctor to suggest going cold turkey when coming of psych medication especially if you have been on it for any length of time.
Let us know how your going.

I know this thread is from 2013 but I wanted to give my input on this since I got off Paroxetine cold turkey one time and think this could help some people.
Back in 2011 I started taking it and in 2013 I got off cold turkey because I was lazy to do it the right way. Worst decision ever! For me at least.
I had a continuous headache for 14 days, had brain zaps, blood pressure would drop out of nowhere and I almost fainted many times on the street. It was awful.
I find it very strange that your doctor was advicing you to do this unless you were taking it for less than 4 weeks as other users had said.

Have to say I started this thread years ago I did go cold turkey of seroxat and it was on the advice of my psychiatrist but he ended up taking me off all my meds and I ended up losing my kids and becoming a drug addict the psychiatrist in question has now been struck off and I'm under the care of a different psychiatrist who has me back on meds and has made me stable and helped me get off drugs and get my children back.

I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to you.
I replied to this thread because I'm having some doubts about Paroxetine side effects and found your topic. Sorry to make you remember from this difficult time in your life.
Glad to know you got the help you needed, got off drugs and got your kids back!
