I really need advice, and soon?

Postby rainbow-productions » Sun Dec 30, 2012 7:24 am

1. I was socially isolated almost completely for 15 years, until this year.
2. This year I was forced into public school, much against my will.
3. I'm severely depressed and, at times, suicidal.
4. I have no hope, or want for, the future unless that future involves writing fiction or drawing comics.

What I need advice on is this; I hate school, I hate social interactions as a whole. Spending every day with a ton of people is killing me mentally and emotionally. I had no education until this point, so catching up to my grade is out of the question unless I want to start in kindergarden. I get good grades because I cheat, and because my teachers honestly don't give a sh*t as long as you wrote something on the paper. I know college would not be the same way, therefor it is out of the question. (Just trust me when I say there's no catching up for me, the only things I was ever taught to do is read basic phonics, I taught myself the rest.

Since I don't want a future, or even a present, that is anything besides drawing or writing, why should I continue letting them put me in school? "You have to go because they're your parents." Is invalid, because they are the people that did not teach me, and kept me isolated within my dysfunctional family for 15 years. I do not respect either of them, and never will. There are other reasons I don't respect them, but I don't want to talk about them here.

To be more specific, I need an answer to this: Why should I not just refuse to go to school?

Please keep in mind that I hate living, and I hate that place, and any future that I find worth living for is one that involves no education beyond what I have learned, or can learn on my own using the internet. (That basically means don't tell me to think about my future, I don't need college for it.)

Actually, you should go because it's your chance to get revenge.

I'm not going to ask why you hate living and hate the future and probably hate the past. Even a horrible existence is better than no existence, keep that in mind.

Keep in mind, things do change in your life. You should also go to school because something may change, which will make you regret that you didn't. Maybe you get interested in other things than comics and fiction. If I understand your post correctly, are you very into goth stuff and similar?

Even if you're going to school, no one will deny you to draw comics. You can be educated AND draw comics. That's in my opinion better than to be uneducated and draw comics. Because you have something to fall back on.

That said, if you are seriously depressed, maybe you should consider getting your depression treated before you force yourself to go to school? I would talk to a doctor about some of this. From your other post, it sounds like people are taking very lightly on your condition. It's not normal to be depressed (but treatable) and it's certainly not normal (but also very treatable) to want to die.

Yeah, one of the arguments against home schooling is the lack of social skills. Humans are social creatures, so when we are kept out of that world... yeah, it can be... unpleasant when the "child" is forced into the rat race later.

Now, you are young, you have... hell you are bound to have heard the "grown-up" arguments, so F that. I didn't listen, so I doubt you will, lol.

You drop out of school and your later life gets a hell of a lot harder. The more BS you front load now, the less you deal with later. Money may not make you happy, but it sure makes the big problems smaller. Trust me here. Making under $20k/yr and now-less-than that, life ain't easy nor pretty. How would you like to get gangrene in your feet and have ER's and six doctors tell you "it doesn't hurt that bad, go home and wash it in warm water" but not tell you it IS gangrene? That is what they did to my father for months as his feet slowly disappeared to gangrene because of blocked arteries. Why? He had no insurance. When medicare kicked in at 65, Oh hey, there's the problem! You have gangrene! They operated the next day.

That is just one of the things in the US you will deal with as uneducated, unskilled "labor".

You want to write and draw comics? Welcome to the club! Amateur writer here. Want to know how seriously people will take an uneducated even in the basics of technique and the "masters"? "Next!"

Learn how to write. Learn every damned annoying rule of grammar and punctuation. Learn the difference between writing for women, men, and kids. Want to draw/illustrate? Go to a school that will probably bore the hell out of you, but will expose you to different methods and thoughts, because one day, you will want to draw something you have never wanted to before.

School is boring, tedious, and odious for those of us that don't live life as one HUGE social club. So, use them! Learn. Read. Ask ANNOYING questions of why, how, what. Make them work for that paycheck. And once you are done there, go find yourself a good illustration/drawing/artistic college (beware, many SUCK and only want your money) and THEN while doing all this boring BS... DRAW YOUR BRAINS OUT. Draw, draw, draw. Keep a pad next to your bed for when you wake up with that cool idea that just HAS to be written down NOW. If you can't sketch a full human inside of fifteen minutes, you are behind the curve for professional grade (I have a list of online friends that show their work or livestream their work as they go and yeah... practice DOES make perfect).

I have one artist friend, that when I met her at 19, she sketched a character of mine inside of 15 min. That includes uploading and posting it to me.

But.. you might have social anxiety, an annoying (I have it) condition that though almost incurable (some get lucky, and at your age, you could) is treatable. Therapy and even some meds can do you wonders with social interaction. But, be honest with the professionals. Tell them the other kids make your skin crawl. Tell them about how being around people all day makes you want to die (make sure to NOT let them tell you you are suicidal. The want to die is actually an anxiety issue of "it feels like you want to die/about to die". I deal with it all the time). And be patient. Too many professionals in the US are far from "professional", particularly with those your age. Patience and ask those of us out here online with more experience for more info.

And, you need someone to force start your social coping skills. You will need these skills later if you want to sell strips or submissions. You can't tell editors to go F themselves anytime they tell you "no" >_>
