Alcohol and Depersonalization

Postby sadgirl1978 » Mon Oct 29, 2007 9:33 am

Has anyone had any issues with alcohol and depersonalization. Last week I got really drunk for the first time in ages and I can't get back to normal. I still feel like I have the "drunk, Im not really here" feeling. Should I go and see a doctor. I felt ok before that night.

I have no experience with alcohol intoxication, but
depersonalisation/derealisation is a frequent symptom
schizoid personality disorder. I recall that you asked
about SPD a while back.

depersonalization and alcohol relates

Postby MadMel » Sun Dec 30, 2007 10:11 pm

reading your post possibly you may have experienced some sort of unsettlement which caused you to over indulge with the alcohol intake, the depersonalization issue seems to have been evident before alcohol intake sounds as though there are associated other issues open to debate here without knowing the background would not wish to comment futher.

However my own personal experiences are that alcohol is used at the very beginning of various forms of breakdown with in ones own personal make up, i have drank for 40 years heavily at times and only now realise this has probably done more harm than good.

Alcohol is an inhibita also it is a depressant and can lead a person into troubled waters, my advice to anyone is to stear clear of this addictive mode.

I drink heavily and regularly as a form of escapism. Whether it be from the anxiety/panic, the feeling of doom/dread, or the depersonalization I regularly feel. But quite often it can worsen it. The very slightest trigger and what ever feeling I'm trying to cover up can raise its' ugly head twice as bad as usual.
I've had times where I haven't felt that state of unreal and that feeling of being disjointed from reality for days and days. But one trigger (often when on alcohol) and it's there for weeks.
I'm unsure of your situation, but it could be a similar one to mine.
Something may have just triggered it when you were intoxicated and it will just fade and go in time.
But I'm no expert.
Just an idea..

Different experience with depersonalization and alcohol...

Postby panteau » Wed Dec 17, 2008 8:48 pm

My depersonalization is at its worst when in groups of people and crowds (I probably have some social anxiety too), so whenever there is more than one person present in the room, I completely zone out.

That said, when I drink at parties, I invariably black out the entire night and do things that are very out of character for me. I don't even have to be drunk, just two or three drinks and I will have no recollection of the night. This is a huge problem because sometimes I end up doing things to hurt myself or loved ones, things that I don't even see myself capable of.

I know that a lot of people forget stuff when they drink, but if I am drinking alone or with one other person, I have complete command over my actions and words, and can recall each and every event of the night, no matter how much I drink.

My theory on this is that the dissociative disorder would exaggerate the dissociative effects of alcohol, which would result in a sort of amnesia. Is this possible, or has anyone else had these problems?

Dissociative states don't exaggerate dissociative effects of something. That something would exaggerate dissociative effects, therefore causing a dissociative state. You're confusing causation with correlation.
It's saying it can only occur to someone having a dissociative disorder. The thing is, everyone has a mind with a capacity for dissociation. 'Dissociative disorder' is a term, okay, a name, a convenient construct.
Anyone and everyone can experience some mild form of dissociation with alcohol, whether they are aware of it (the term or the 'symptom') or not. There are schools of thought that hold dissociation as a beneficial self-defence/self-preservation. So while 'stepping back' or 'outside' of the reality causing the stress or anxiety or whatever, the mind would not be likely to preserve memories of what happens during dissociation, seeing as it is concerned with self-preservation.
