Question my perception of reality

Postby Ore688 » Thu May 23, 2024 1:59 pm

My derealization is severe to the point I have nihilistic delusion. Is this a typical part of my mental illness?

I hold firm beliefs that nothing is real and due to history of severe developmental delay, I can't comprehend how most of humans have superior intelligence and discovered and build electronics. So how do I learn how to appreciate this complexity?

I recommend you discuss this with a psychiatrist and/or yoor general practitioner. Delusions and hallucinations (psychosis) which are recurring and debilitating generally point towards other mental or physical health issues.

To some extent, derealization includes a break from reality as one would expect with psychotic episodes, but it's impossible for us to judge what applies to your specific situation.

I am sorry if it sounded that I was asking for a medical advice, my motivation was not meant to do that, I am just trying to understand myself.

I understood that you meant it as a way of self-discovery and I refer you to a therapist because they are better equipped to help you figure out if what you are experiencing is normal for your disorder or something else. That was your first question.

As for the second bit, you can discuss that there as well, but at least I can respond to that.
- does it matter if you don't appreciate or understand the complexity of certain things ?

Superior intelligence has always been an iffy topic to me. I.e. Some people are better at retaining information but can't make logical connections between all that information. See for example scouts. They go out, retain every bit of information they see and hear then relay that information to a superior who will use that information in a tactics meeting because they can't.
At the same time people who are good at chess can think ahead very far but might actually be horrid at everything else that requires a bit of thought.
And so on.
So when you mention people who build electronic devices, those are people who have practised and used their skill set towards that specific goal. Their brain is attuned to that specific task. Try asking computer technicians to build a house from scratch, you'll find that they can't.

As such, developmental delays or not, there's something out there your brain can attune to in the same manner. You just have to find it.

And I feel that this is the only way to appreciate intelligence; by recognising it is diverse and unique to every individual.

Hope that's a better clearer response.
