Question about feeling unreal.

Postby enrico » Wed Jan 14, 2015 5:02 am

In most people with dp/dr the feeling of unreal is often mentioned.

Every thing in the world has an opposite, right?

Sad-happy
depressed-manic
and etc.

so whats the opposite of feeling unreal?
obviously the answer is feeling real.

But if feeling unreal have different degrees, like very little unreal to very unreal...
Can feelings of little real to extremely real exist also?

Like feeling that every thing is to real.

Is there such a disorder?
is it something that exists?
if so give me an example please.

thanks
enrico

Depersonalization= disconnect!

Imagine you can see someone in front of you, but its more 2 dimensional! your body does not feel its way into the surroundings! its like watching a computer screen! you see it, manipulate the data, but you do not connect to it like you would a human being!

You are being protected by thick defensive walls; psychological walls! They keep things flat and protected, like a plexiglass wall!

Have you ever seen a plexiglass clear screen in front of a drummer! They use them in churches and schools at times! It noise deflection!

Depersonalization is similar to this drum deflection wall! You are on one side of the wall, the outer world is on the other side! I can see, but you can't feel!

In response to enrico, I would say that yes, there is such a thing as when life is too real. As somebody who has experienced both extremes, I would like to say that I can speak with some authority on my personal experience of life and the human (inhuman) experience, but it doesn't necessarily apply to everybody. To preface this, the thing that caused a year long or more spell of depersonalization was chronic pain accompanied by constant reoccurring adrenal responses until my adrenal system ceased to function altogether, followed by intense anxiety for the next year precipitated my particular shade of depersonalization. Although I was depersonalized, I still experienced intense pain for every waking moment of my life. Once I returned to a sort of normal state, I was overtaken by the reality of life: pain. Always. It became very clear to me why I depersonalized in the first place; the pain was less intense that way. It was there, but less potent. So now nearly every moment of my life when I'm not looking at beautiful colors, appreciating the breeze, smiling and knowing I brightened somebody's day, or watching the sunset or sunrise, is far too real. It makes me long for death simply to escape the rotting prison that is my body, but I'm taken away from that line of thought when I think of all the people that I would bring great sadness, and the wasted potential, so I tell myself I can die after I make real contributions to science and help humankind in such a way that fewer people will have to suffer to the degree and with the variety that I have. That is what comes to mind when I think of things being too real. It seems to me that it only occurs in negative contexts, but I am open to any disagreements on that front, as I have not lived the lives of every human on earth (at least I don't think I did ;) )To me, too real means that a life event and the consequences it entails were more than I was prepared for and more than what I had planned for as well as being somewhat shocking and/or surprising. I will conclude with he idea of some dude a whole helluva lot smarter than me: "Problems in life seems to come from an over abundance of life of and under abundance of life, so we should strive to live in balance" I butchered that quote, sorry not sorry (My memory for facts such as that is totally ###$)
