Substance-induced persisting dementia is the label for persisting dementia of a substance. Other causes of dementia should always be considered though. How long have you been on an antipsychotic?

Risperidone and lithium are usually prescribed for severe bipolar (with psychotic features) or schizoaffective disorders. Psychosis whether you're aware of it happening or not will cause cognitive impairment. Lack of sleep is another major cause of cognitive impairment and contributes to psychosis too. Discontinuing the antipsychotic for bipolar or schizoaffective may do nothing to improve cognitive impairment if psychosis and insomnia continues.

Dementia usually has a biological cause and until that is identified one has no direction in its treatment. Sometimes the cause can be treated and sometimes it can't. Long term (decades) use of antipsychotic have proven difficult to treat in Finland. Discontinuing the antipsychotics have been unsuccessful.
