My delusional disorder, cured rather instantly?

qwerty,

I'm pretty sure at this point my DD was a one-time episode, albeit a very long and confusing one. My family knows that I was dealing with some medical problems last year.

I wanted to know how many others also experienced this kind of one-time-only DD.

As long as she is seeing a psychiatrist for *something* it's a good idea, just in case the delusions come back. Good luck.

She is extremely reluctant to discuss anything about those periods. If I do bring it up she might grudgingly admit she had "problems" back then but gets extremely angry if I try to discuss details.

From what I HAVE been able to tell her memory of the time is distorted. She simply doesn't remember events that happened in those periods the same way I do, doesn't remember things she said to me or to other people the way I or they do, etc. I gather from other people on this board that this is pretty common.

Yes, I consider it a step forward that she is at least seeing a psychiatrist for something, that is definitely a step forward from where we were this time last year. On that level she admits that she needs help, and hopefully if it comes back he will be able to help her.

xiexieniii,

FWIW, I found references to schizophrenia which is not chronic but cyclical (episodes of active psychosis and normal functioning in between) and even to schizophrenia with only one psychotic episode. So, it is quite possible that your original diagnosis is in fact "correct". I am using quotes because IMO, there are many gray areas in mental illness diagnosis as defined by DSM-IV. It is based on criteria which are rather subjective and I find many potential overlaps between supposedly different conditions. In the end, what is really important is getting adequate treatment which is, after all, almost identical for all psychotic conditions.

I am so sorry you had to go through that. My daughter too had a two year "bout" of what had been diagnosed as "psychotic" and the last time doctor visit was "schizephrenic". I was devastated, thinking she would be like that her entire life. After being hospitalized 5 times and ending up on a medication called "Invega", she became somber, slow and sorta morose and gained a lot of weight but was better to a tolerable degree. After 6 months she begged and begged to get off the medication, because it made her feel "drugged". I made her contact a Nutritionist/Functional Medicine Doctor. She got on numerous supplements, started yoga (started back) and tried to eat & sleep right. She swore off all street drugs-marijuana, etc., which I believe must have caused this disorder. After being on the supplements for 3 months, she began weaning off the medication very slowly, 9mg, down to 6mg, down to 3mg and then to 1.5 mg. She is now off all anti-psychotic/schizophrenia mediations and is working, hanging out with friends and is back in school-she is 22, which previously she could not do. Her disorder lasted a full two to two and one half years. She has been off the medication fully for a month now and is not showing even one sign of reverting back to this disorder. I am perplexed but very happy and I remain causiously optimistic. I truly believe in getting your body/mind healthy and then seeing if that can help these mental disorders.

\i'm sorry you've had to go through this, and it's such great news that you seem to have recovered and actually have full insight into it all retrospectively! From what I understand it is possible to have a full recovery, I think you are a minority so it's lovely to read a happy ending. A book by Alistair Munro on Delusional Disorder talks about case studies and pschiatric research and from what I remember reading about it, some people just have DD for a short while, or after a trauma triggered it. Just be self compassionate now, and try to avoid heavy stress...and look after yourself. People can have a relaps, so it's good that you've got family looking out for you. I wish you all the best, thank you for sharing on here it's such a refreshing change to read a positive outcome!

It seems I suffered from some kind of delusional disorder for about a year from Feb 2007 to Feb 2008 before being cured by an anti-psychotic, Risperdal.

Looking back now, I had no idea I was delusional (none of my family even suspected anything was wrong with me for an entire year) -- for many months I firmly believed that professors, co-workers, and friends were either secretly in love with me or were somehow plotting my demise. For a long time I had difficulty leaving the house because I thought that complete strangers were staring at me, trying to communicate with me through secret body language signals. I thought the footsteps of the people living above me were in fact coded messages directed at me, and I responded by knocking on the walls (in code) and hanging written responses outside my door that I believed they would understand. It became a full-blown psychosis by the time I got to the hospital -- I believed I had powers to move objects with my mind and that I could telepathically communicate with anyone in the world. The Risperdal almost immediately ended all these bizarre thoughts and sensations, and that was the end of that strange, year-long experience.

Right now I'm on no medication. It's been like this since the end of Feb. I'm wondering if it's possible to have had DD for only a short period of time in your life? Like, I was completely normal before 2007, then came that tumultuous delusional year, and now it's back again to normal.

I feel like this DD/psychosis bit me in the butt of nowhere -- I wasn't using drugs and I wasn't under any stress. I don't have schizophrenia and I don't believe I'm bipolar.

Is this possible?

I was diagnosed with dd in 1998 and cured in 1999. I was on no meds for about 8 years and then it came back. What you described was very similar to what I experienced. I don't know if there is a "cure" but I am back to normal now after 8 years of hell. It was worse the second time it came around and I am taking meds Loxapine and klonopin and seeing a therapist once a week. I lost so much that I never want it to come back and will do whatever is necessary to keep me healthy.

If you start getting any of those old feeling back get help right away. Don't let it progress to the point where you stop trusting everyone it will be too late.

Good Luck and I wish you well. Stay healthy!
