My brother won't get help - family has abandoned

Postby Only1left » Mon Jul 28, 2014 10:08 pm

Someone please help me get my brother to get medical help. He has grandiose God delusion and thinks he's messenger of god. He's left his wife and 2 toddler girls because god told him they were in danger, he disappeared to Africa and India, and has had severe delusional behavior amassing 1000s of hrs of videos for "proof." He has alienated everyone and is about to get kicked out of my parents house. He refuses to see dr, hospital, testing, etc. we've had countless talks, interventions, 1dr visit that he lied (even though I met with dr and told him the true story) - everything you can imagine. What do you so when someone absolutely refuses help? His family has abandoned him and my parents are done. He was a dr in his former life and appealing to the medical side does nothing. I've driven him to psych appts and he gets out of car and runs away. I've cried and shared all my fears with him. His children miss him terribly and he says he wants to see them but god won't let him. He's about to disappear off the planet.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Yes but you are not going to like what I have to say.

I don't know the situation well enough to be certain of anything. With that in mind here is my thought. Your brother is having spiritually transformative experience. Google it instead of questioning it. My suspicion is that your brother has a better grip on reality than most of those around him. What you think of as "normal" is an extreme state of dissociation lacking in free will. To use a metaphor "blind sheep."

Read some R.D. Laing. Read about the role of family in double bind. *mod edit*

I don't think someone who is grandiose and thinks he is a messenger of God is having a "spiritually transformative experience." If "God told him" his wife and two daughters were in danger, there is something wrong. Unfortunately, I don't know how to help you to get your brother medical help. I'm sorry.

I have so much trouble with the laws today because someone can only be committed if they are a danger to themselves or others. The problem is, your brother does not seem to be dangerous to anyone right now. Trust me, as a daughter who has recently accepted her mother's dd, I am with you. I would give ANYTHING for my mother to be evaluated so doc's can see what is really going on.

Are all of your family members in agreement that your brother needs help?

I cannot say that this happening in this case, but I agree about the 'collective unconscious'. If you take a look on internet forums where people think they are having a 'spiritual awakening', and then take a look on psych forums, you will see that the experiences overlap. I genuinely believe that in some cases of mental illness, the 'patient' is actually quite sane and is exhibiting odd behaviour through fear and uncertainty, not through madness. But, of course, the collective unconscious and its massive ego will have none of this.

Best wishes,

Sure, the experiences overlap. But that's not at all what I'm hearing in this example. That part about his wife and two daughters being in danger is the tip-off. Spirituality is different from having a direct pipeline with a God who tells you things.
