Hi there dude23 : )
For sure! Work is a challenge! I've read many an article that talks about this particular challenge. Geez... I've been late or near late all my life to work until the beginning of this school year... It was important for me to have victory over this in my life.... Finally dagnabit!! I'd start out all passionate and on fire- then eventually by the third or fourth week ive fallen back into racing against the clock because im up til the wee hours cuz my brain wont be still... Shhhhh! Invariably I begin to toggle between workaholic on steroids or completely depressed that I can't even lift my head from the pillow! I suggest you list, like I did, all of the specific behaviors that negatively impact your workplace... Why did you get fired? My Principal pulled me aside to tell me that I am intimidating, people are afraid to disagree with me because I fire back in ways that really turn people off!! And it's been documented: people who suffer from cyclothymia have an exceptionally difficult time taking criticism or get defensive and confrontational when disagreed with. That was crappy grammar, I know! I'll just crack on!! It's excruciatingly difficult to work normally, in my humble opinion. We're hot n cold, take things personally, are downright explosive when challenged, may battle with PUNCTUALITY?? I had to reflect and take a hard look at me. Since we know that we can only change ourselves, you arm yourself with knowledge, recognize that these are triggers, and be ever aware of your weaknesses, because we flip out I GO OFF!! When challenged ... But it's about discovering how to change our responses and break free from the bondage. I suggest getting hold of a copy of the cyclothymia workbook and read read read from every source possible! I don't mean to over generalize or stereotype, it's just that every time I read about something that I experienced first hand, and tons of peeps with cyclothymia report the same thing!.. That chill would run up my spine and I knew that I fit this description to a tee! "know thyself" and follow your gut instinct on your journey to living a victorious life... overcoming old patterns of behavior that impede your optimal performance in the workplace. Finding the perfect fit in a pdoc makes a huge difference, too! All the best to you, Dude! Ke aloha :P

Hello thedude23,

I haven't had the kind of trouble you have with work. But one of my coworkers described me as going at a million miles an hour while he was still trying to figure out what he was doing. He didn't feel comfortable working with me. Another was irritated when I saw work to be done and jumped in and did it. She reacted like I thought she just wasn't going to do it. She also seemed to be extremely sensitive to my mood changes before I ever knew they were happening. She liked to come up with reasons I was upset with her when I wasn't upset with her at all. Both of them work elsewhere now and I never see them. I'm not seeking their input on anything. I am reflecting though on my experiences with them.

Don't worry many of us have troubles with the workplace I think. I am a PhD student and as my first job I just realised how hard it is not to get fired... Last month I shot a colleague with a toy gun in front of a classroom, I thought it was a harmless prank but the director of my department was extremely unpleased, and I lost his trust as well the trust of my supervisor... He told me that next time I do something like that he would try to fire me... Fortunately it's not easy to fire people in my university! ;)
I think it is best to talk about your condition to your boss when you begin a job, and then trying to be in "dull" mode when at the workplace. In any case, it ain't easy indeed!

I need some advice. I was diagnosed with Cyclothymia a few years ago and although things have been difficult, I have managed a relatively good day to day life and have managed to deal with every mood I have daily.
I have struggled all my life in work situations, throwing myself at it one min and giving it my all and then the next day not even being able to concentrate or be slightly motivated.
I was luckily enough to set up my own business and this made things a little easier as I could work to my moods and didn’t have to explain to anyone but once again that got all too much and I gained myself a full time job. Having been there only a few weeks I have once again fallen into the same difficulties, experiencing major panic attacks now and the feeling of just needing to get out. I love the job itself but just feel like I can’t cope at times and everything I have to do, no matter how simply is just a massive task. I make excuses and tell lies as I don’t want my new employers to know about my issues as in my opinion, it has been used against me and although I have fought back, I always end up losing out.
I’ve been medication free for a good year or two but now feel I’m worse than ever. I can’t cope. Juggling work and life right now is really hard and often impossible. I’m going back to see my doc tomorrow but just don’t know what to do about work. It’s a stressful, fast paced job and just feel right now that’s it’s too much. Although we need the money as I’ve done my norm and been on a major spending spree recently - another one of my vices.
I’ve had over 20 jobs and rarely last longer than 12 months max in any one place. Getting harder though the older I get. Any advice would be great

Could you consider getting back on some meds? Or are you already on them?

I don't have cyclothymia but I am on that mood spectrum and I have bipolar so I understand how it feels when you just can't cope with a job. I get depressed and I get terrible anxiety.
