Music therapy

Postby Dark_in_the_Light » Sat Sep 10, 2011 12:15 am

Anyone have an experience even remotely like this? I like to play music in minor keys on the down days. Those sad sounding songs actually sound richer on those days. Sometimes, I'll play just a few songs. Sometimes, I play them for two hours. I feel better when I stop. I don't know if the music is helping me elevate into a better mood or if I'm just so rapid a cycler I would have been pepped up again in a little while anyway.

Not me! Music to me is huge. When I was first admitted I was given a guitar to borrow from the ward OT and within half an hour i had written my first song. I now am part of a group that works with ppl who have MH problems and we write perform and record songs. I find music soothes me, is a way to let out emotion and tell my story. Without it i dont know where i would be and I am so thankful for it. I also play violin as well as guitar and piano and it makes a huge difference.

Hi guys :D
I would have to say that when I am down, I can't listen to music that has either down lyrics or beat to it... makes me sadder. When I'm in a slump, I tend to listen to music that I would call "Sunday Music"... kinda calm, mellow, somewhat upbeat but very sedately upbeat (if that's possible?). When I'm "up", I do tend to listen to uppity music (harder industrial, rock, punk) that kinda gets my blood flowing even more (especially when driving and cleaning house...lol). But when I am down, I really have to be careful to stay away from "down" music because it makes things much worse and tends to aid my mind in spiraling downward.

Anyone else not able to listen to "down" music when they're down?

Oh, yeah... I'm a big big old school 80's fan and the Smiths are DEF out when I'm down. Love Morrissey to pieces, but holey schamoley!

Hey, speakin of REM... just saw a news posting that they're breaking up after 31 years. This makes me sad :-( They were one of the classic 80s-forlorn-lyrics bands... always a fave of mine.

Here's the news snippet...

REM's Losing My Religion is one of those songs that sounds better when I'm down.

Even though the music isn't a person, I feel like I'm connecting with someone when the tones are mournful and maybe that's what helps.

I think it's safe to say that Mika is an up type of music

Sad about REM tho I think their earlier stuff was better.
