Books on cyclothymia

Postby Dark_in_the_Light » Sat Sep 03, 2011 2:35 am

Anyone read The Cyclothymia Workbook by Prentiss Price? For reasons I don't get, my local library doesn't have it and can't get it through interlibrary loan. I wonder what other people have to say about it before I pay for my own copy.

Nobody knows anything about it? Well, you've all done well so far. I didn't expect to find a limit to the knowledge base. :)

Hi Dark in the Light :P
I ordered a copy from amazon.com a while back. Should be here any day now. Heard real positive comments about it. Will give you my own reader's response when I finish it. I've been looking forward to reading something entirely written about cyclothymia... Will keep you posted.

I just checked again and found it's available through interlibrary loan at my library. That must have happened in the last few days. Now I'm afraid to ask for a hold on the book. I don't want the people at the library thinking I'm crazy. I'll wait 'til I'm hypomanic again and don't care what people think.

I just got the cyclothymia workbook in the mail. It looks really fabulous... Worth purchasing because it's a workbook to highlight, write in the margins, spaces to respond, to get maximum use out
of applying the principles the author recommended diving in with that kind of spirit equipped with highlighter and pens : ) hope the sun's beams are bursting through the dark today, just like your avatar!

On the down side today, but not much. When I interact with people I feel pretty good, but as soon as it's over I'm slightly gloomy again.

I'm making money more of an issue than it is before the money makes itself a bigger issue. But I haven't had time to get to the library. I'll probably order the book eventually.

Hi Dark in the Light!
Was wondering if you read the first section of chapter 3 "how is cyclothymia different from normal moodiness in the Cyclothymia Book? From my perspective ... These paragraphs describe me creepily quite well! If the hairs stood up on the back of your neck too, kind of a sign, but if you couldn't identify, relate and connect so much... Then maybe you're not cyclothymic necessarily. I just thought the author did a great job describing the difference.

I find that section confusing.

The author says, "With cyclothymia...moody feelings and behaviors typically last longer." However, she goes on, "Those with cyclothymia tend to experience frequent swings in mood...."

Those two sentences seem contradictory. If the moody feelings last longer, how can they be more frequent?

I've read up to section 2 but am going back to the part about recognizing your patterns. I'm having trouble with that.

Page 45: "People with cyclothymia tend to feel things strongly." Yeah, I do. But there are also times when I think my emotions are turned off.

AAAAHHHHAAAHHH!!!
I get why you're confused!! You don't have estrogen!! You don''t get :P PMS! Lucky you! Seriously! Moodiness and Mood swings are what we have to differentiate between and journal about as cyclothymic females because of our menstrual cycles and hormones. Now, ya'll don't go through the basic moodiness that we experience, generally speaking... agreed? Men are pretty even keel emotionally which is perhaps why your emotions are "turned off" ...which is interesting, because sometimes cyclothymics are described as being overly empathic and can cry watching a Hallmark commercial. (all of which are relative...some characteristics fit one person and not another : )

I don't see that contadiction, actually... for example... and again, being a chick helps because we have PMS moodiness with which to compare it with... when I'm PMS moody, I'm irritated over the smallest things, cry for no reason at all, just weepy and melancholy... but the length of these moods aren't drawn out for hours into the evening days or even weeks.... here's the key... the length of mood is what is long for the cyclothymic....my hypomania can go for a weekend to 4 days etc..... my normal states have been more frequent, week long even, till quite recently... just entering a depression for the past 3 weeks, so you can see how the length of the mood is LONG, and the FREQUENCY of SWING is what Prentiss is talkin' about. Did that make sense?... depends on the stress factors, sleep, diet... learning a lot, so the frequency of the swings from normal to depression to hypomanic can be frequent... like right now... I'm in the flippin dumps! I want to buy a half gallon of Dreyer's Jamoca Almond Fudge, hermit out and escape into a movie! OR...If I wanted to, I could crank a pot of coffee, show up at the football game and have the entire crowd at the football field energized, on their feet, cheering at the top of their lungs because I am the hypomanic energizer bunny and nobody energizes a crowd like THIS cyclothymic mama!! I've done this my entire unmedicated life!! Families are calling, "But the boys are asking for you!"... I'm not (feeling)WELL!!!! I''m getting me that ice cream and watching star trek! live long and prosper!!! Baaahaaa!
