what meds are you taking

Postby Guest » Wed Jul 27, 2005 7:38 am

I just started a combo of lamictal 300mg and just added Prozac. The Prozac is making me feel great, the best I have ever felt, but its only been a month. I had a previos MANIC episode with Paxil with no mood stabilizer and am concerned it may happen again. Anyone tried this combo or something else similar?

Did you start the Prozac and Lamictal together? SSRI's (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) sometimes will cause hypomania in people with Cyclothymia. I just wonder if it's the Lamictal that's causing the improvement, and not the combination. Having an episode on Paxil without a mood stabilizer makes sense. But were you ever on the Prozac by itself? Check with your doctor for sure to clear this up. Some physicians will not use antidepressents at all for patients with Cyclothymia, but it's always trial-and-error. I started Lamictal recently, but have been on high dose Effexor XR for years. After one dose of Lamictal, I had a bad manic episode, but continued the ramp-up of Lamictal anyway. There has been gradual improvement. Good luck..CB

Originally I was put on Fluoxetine (Prozac) which increased from 20mgs - 40mgs. It made my mood swings worse and it took me a year to convince GP and Shrink that it's not working. there is now discussion on mood stabaliser ie Lithium. Good Luck

I was taking 50 mg of topamax and then elevated to 75 mg and I had a bad reaction so I was put back down to 50 mg and then added 25mg of zoloft. I've been on that for the last year but for the past month or two i've felt that the meds haven't been doing anything and i've moved so I have a new psychiatrist...so she has put me on 100 mg of topamax and i'm working my way up to 100 mg of zoloft. So far I haven't been having any bad reactions to the topamax again but that could be because of my mood and the fact that i'm taking it with the zoloft. But the change has only been in affect for like 4 days...so we shall see...

LiCO3 works for me!

Postby Craig » Fri Jul 11, 2008 11:49 pm

I am a big fan of lithium. My shrink started me off on 900 mg straight Li. I had toxic symptoms the very next day and I could barely drive to work. (I really shoudn't have walked let alone driven) :?

I cut back to 300 mg and things settled down. I moved up another 300 mg of timed release every few weeks and am now at 1200 mg and feeling better than I ever have before. I have not had any weight gain and my energy is so much more even.

I do drink lots of water.

:!: Drink lots of water if you are on lithium. :!:

Living with cyclothymia is like driving a car with 4 flat tires. It takes tremendous effort to get any where. So many things are easier once the rollercoaster of cyclothymia levels off. I really don't miss the frantic highs and I am glad to be without the lows. I can feel happy or sad, angry or scared on lithium. I am more aware of my thoughts and feelings and can make much better choices now.
I feel less out of control.
