Mom Might Have Cyclothymia

Postby EarlGreyDregs » Tue Aug 02, 2011 8:14 pm

So - my mother & I are a little curious as to whether or not she has Cyclothymia. She obviously does not have Bipolar I or II because she is definitely not as inflicted as myself. (I'm Bipolar type unspecified)

We're looking for a good description of what Cyclothymia is for people who experience it. I would say she definitely experiences dysthymia a lot of the time, I'd say about 50% of the time. But she will also get these periods of excitement or extreme irritability/anger. Which could be interpreted as "mild" hypomania. I would say that's about 20% of the time while normalcy is around 30%. (Although in my mind, she's either in a extremely irritable/angry mood or a dysthymic mood.)

I guess we are just curious because I'm Bipolar & my brother might be as well. He's been diagnosed as having ADHD, but I think the two can often be confused & misdiagnosed. So, in case this is genetic, we want to know if my mother is Cyclothymic. My mom's mother was strangely mentally afflicted but my mom didn't know her very well. Apparently my grandmother wasn't a talker. But she had strange phobias & was homeless mostly all of her life. So - her mental state is basically unknown.

There is nothing on my father's side that indicates mental illness. It's all from my mother's side. She's also had Panic Disorder when she was younger, but she claims that she's always had these "mood swings". Although - they are too mild to want medication. She doesn't even want medication. She despises psychiatric medication.

We're just curious. Could my mom be Cyclothymic? Any good descriptions by others that I could compare & contrast?

Note: Don't say "go to a doctor", this is simple curiosity, my mother doesn't want therapy or medication for this. She handles it fairly well on her own. (Or so she thinks, her dysthymic states are pretty bad, I wish she'd get therapy, but there's no way in hell she'd agree.)

This isn't just me though, she wants to know if she might have it as well.

I used Bing and Google to look up more about cyclothymia when I found out about it last year. There are a lot of places with info on it. I'm sure some are less reliable than others, but a lot of them have the same statistics, the same symptoms in their lists, etc. I felt like I was reading about myself. The mild depression I had on and off for a long time. But the descriptions of hypomania were of things I never thought were a problem: staying up for hours later than I should have to do things that could wait, having creative periods in which I worked toward some goal tirelessly, not being able to sleep because of an active mind. Everybody will be a little different though. Self-medication with drugs, legal and otherwise, is considered a symptom but I have never tried that.
