Link between Epilepsy and Cyclothymia?

Postby Brianna » Sun Jun 05, 2005 2:49 am

I've been noticing that a popular medication to treat Cyclothymic Disorder is Depakote, and anti-epileptic. Are there any known links between epilepsy and Cyclothymia and/or Bipolar Disorder as far as neuroscience goes? I.e. similarly problematic neurotransmitters?

There is no casual link between epilepsy and cyclyothymia. You were right on the money when you said they work on the same neurotransmitters. Many seizure drugs are now used to treat psychological disorders after they were accidentally observed decreasing psychological symptoms. Depakote is possibly the most common one. But even though these drugs work in the brain, sometimes on the same neurotransmitters and are frequently used in both disorders, there is no other connection. The short of it is no you won't develope seizures because you have bipolar and the same is true of developing mental disorders because you have epilepsy.

Treatment/therapy only works when you are ready and willing to acknowledge you have a problem.
