I don't like it how this refers to people who hurt themselves as "they." It makes me feel like I'm not anything like anyone else.

If you're thinking about killing yourself, don't. You have kids. Live for them. If you kill yourself they probably will have s***** lives and probably end up killing themselves.

Re: Alternatives For Cutting

Whenever I have the urge, I know it sounds stupid but I braid. I cut three really long pieces of string and I braid them while I blast music so loud I can't hear myself think. I also run, just in my basement. I put headphones in and just run back and forth, until my legs are too tired to move.=) One more thing I do is just squish a stress ball, it's a pretty good way to get out your anger, you can smash it or throw is or whatever you want to do with it.=)
But I always have music playing, it's one thing to get you physically distracted but it's a mental battle your usually facing.
I love Britt Nicole, my family and my pets. But I have a secret......I cut.
Feel free to PM and talk, I love to meet new people and just chat.=)

If I want to cut because I'm upset, then listening to really, really angry-sounding/upsetting music helps work through it. Anything by Mindless Self Indulgence and Katy Perry's "ur so gay" are my mainstays. (and yes, I find Katy Perry that upsetting, Lol)

Only works if I'm upset (as opposed to anxious), though.

bull crap. You underestimate the consequences of bad parenting. What neil@libra wrote is far beyond "sloppy". OUr brains are constantly shaped by our experiences and are the most plastic when we are young. And when we are young we are influence the most by our caregivers, particularly if there is lack of "care".

That is bull crap i had a next to perfect childhood and I am the one who chose to si. My parents did nothing wrong. You underestimate the chocies a person makes

It's all about the intention. If you do something with the intention of causing pain to yourself, then yes it's self-injury.

The last time I tried the rubber band thing, I left welts and my classmates were wondering what I was doing, so I said I was keeping myself awake in lectures. Ah well.

Skinless wrote:OK, I tried googling to find out whether bruises can result in scars, but I can't find anything definitive. Maybe someone here knows? Can bruises form into scars or cause skin decoloration?

The thing is I have a bruise on my wrist and I never cut my arms before. It means a lot to me and although sometimes I really wanted, I never cut my arms. And if I get a scar/weird skin color because of a bruise...

Also, this is not at all a big bruise. But it's rather red. And before there was a bruise there, there was another bruise under the new one...

I have tell, I feel stupid for asking this, but it someone could just tell me that bruises can't turn into scars/skin decoloration it would calm me down

I can personally tell you from someone who has given themselves very nasty bruises sometimes taking over a month to heal, I have never gotten any kind of scar and I hit myself in the same places every time.

The number of young people who participate in acts of self-mutilation is growing. Although self-harm is rarely a suicidal act, it must be taken seriously because accidental deaths do occur. It’s difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel but breaking the cycle of self-abuse is possible if you reach out to someone you trust. Finding new ways of coping with your feelings can help to tone down the intense urges you feel which results in you hurting yourself. Recovery is a continuous process and learning how to stop this addictive behavior is within your reach if you work at it.

Well I am a very creative person. So when I have the urge to cut really bad I do the following things:
1. Listen to music really loudly
2. Draw
3. Write down how I feel (This one only sometimes works)
4. Read
5. Sit down, close my eyes, and clear my head

These work for me most of the time. They normally help get that urge out of my head.
