Is this SI?

Postby RedRoses » Mon Oct 02, 2006 1:42 am

Would it be considered self injury if I always pierce myself and enjoy it. All my piercings are "normal" so it's not like I'm piercing my arm or something like that. I have my ears all filled up, my eyebrow, etc. I've repierced quite a few holes, sometimes I let a piercing heal a bit just so I can push it through and fiddle with it throughout the day, irritating it. I don't do it as excessively as a cutter would cut but I do it enough to consider it self injury, I suppose. I just get so much relief and an addrenalin high off of it. Would this be considered self injury if I enjoy it and don't feel ashamed or the need to hide the fact that I do it?

Actully it sound's somewhere along the line's of Piquerism i had a bit of this myself when i was young. It's not very common.

Piquerism is a psychosexual disorder in which one finds pleasure in penetrating his/her body with sharp objects (pins, razors, knives, etc.).

well it all depends on the circumstances under which you do this piercing: do you do it when you're really depressed, do you do it when you've been emotionally hurt, or do you do it when/if you are considering suicide? if so then I would consider it SI and as Tortured_Mind said it's more along the lines of wound healing interference. and if these are not the case then you may indeed have Piquerism, however it would be foolish to label yourself without knowing for sure, so I would look it up and research its symptoms and find out how many you would need to be diagnosed, or see a psychologist about it if you wish

I don't consider piercing as being self-injury. It creates pain but it also creates beauty. If a piercing were to be defined as self-injury then plastic surgery and tattooing would also have to be considered self-injury.

The question to ask is if you would still do it if you did not find it beautiful. Are you doing it to cause pain or you doing it because you like the way it looks? If both, which is more. My understanding of SI is that the primary purpose for the action has to be to cause pain.
