How to deal with recurring negative thoughts?

Postby spork » Sat Jun 24, 2017 10:35 pm

Pretty soon I'm going to be in a situation that will cause me to think a lot about a particular bad memory I have and the thoughts will likely make me feel depressed, alone, and hopeless. Sadly I can't see my therapist before then. I'll do a lot of positive self talk and all but I wonder if there are additional ways to stop obsessing over the same bad memory?

Hello! I'd really like to help in any way I can. The first thing I always repeat to myself is that this depression is a chemical imbalance of the brain and I need to find something to create a different chemical (this is me mostly trying to justify why I feel this way and it empowers me because I know I can change it). If you ever want to talk, I frequently check this site otherwise I would suggest listening to positive music & singing to it as loudly a possible. My positive music taste is mainly 60s and 70s beach vibes and if you'd ever like to listen to some upbeat music I would love to make you a playlist.

To cope with my depression I also care for animals (mainly fish and reptiles) and it truly works wonders! I would suggest staying away from plants because they aren't as responsive but I love going on walks and observing and touching different flowers & leaves. If I particularly like a leaf or flower I'll take it home with me and keep it for a few days.

I also have mild autism and truly excel in visual art. I paint digitally and with watercolours and it's usually very simple leaves/animals (if I do detailed paintings it becomes a project and no longer an emotional release). If you'd like examples of anything, more in depth opinions, or anything in general please let me know. I don't want you to feel depressed or hopeless, please take care!

First of all, I wouldn't link the situation and the feelings I have. Let the situation be separate and the feelings be separate. The situation will not change because of what you are tormented by feelings. From the strong feelings that hurt you, you will only get worse but nothing will change. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce this pain. I say this because often a person does not want it, because it seems to him that if he begins to calm down, it will be like a betrayal of yourself. In fact, if you start to purposefully reduce the intensity of feelings, if you start to calm down, then you will be calmer, but the feelings will not go away. It seems they go into the shadows, but they still stay with you. But they don't hurt you anymore.
