I dont know how to change it round and dont know why my wife

Help,
I really dont know why I lie.
It has a good chance of ruining my life - in fact to some degree it has already.
I am not sleeping around or doing drugs or anything at all actually.
However what I do is lie every day about who I work with - particularly women.
There are several women in my office who I work with to some degree but when I go home and my wife asks me who I was working with I say Tom or Paul or whoever -never the women.
This is to some degree because I percieve my wife would be jealous but I rally dont know whay it going on or what is going on in my head.
How can I change this behaviour?
She knows I am lying and it is an endless week on week year on year process.
It is just an easy way out for me because if I ever mention a woman to my wife she asks me endless questions about what did she say what does she look like do you fancy her etc etc.
I dont know why I cant cope with this but I cant so I lie and just say again and again no I dont work with any women.
I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me.
Or anyone else in a similar situation.
It seems such a stupid thing to be ruining your life and my wifes.
I am a 50 year old and love my wife but I am killing her inside - I can see it.
Please help.

Hi, noslenp! Do you feel a compulsion to lie or like you have to lie in order to avoid trouble? It's probably not the same thing. Your wife might have a problem with jealousy so you try to keep things peaceful. Have you thought about getting therapy together?

Thanks for you very understanding reply.
I think you are probably right in a way but I still dont think it is acceptable on my part.
We have tried counselling together bur have always ended up at square one.
My wife does have a big jealousy problem and most/all of the lies are to avaoid trouble.
I would appreciate your further help.

Why do you think you ended back at square one? To be honest, I think it would do you good to talk to a therapist on your own about all this and at least figure things out for yourself if your wife won't do anything to change.
