they're completely different therapies. don't be fooled by the fact that they both have the words "behavioural" and "therapy" in the name. just google them and you'll see.

CBT stands for cognitive-behavioral therapy, which is a general method of working with various mental conditions and problems.
DBT stands for dialectical behavioral therapy, which is a treatment method designed to work specifically with individuals with borderline personality disorder.

My understanding, to the degree that it is legitimate, is that DBT is a species of CBT. DBT, the brainchild of Marsha B. Linehan, is considered I think the third generation of CBT techniques. They tend to be effective for different things. CBT is good for depression, as is found in major depression, and anxiety spectrum disorders. DBT, as I have heard from people with bipolar, is more helpful for manic-depression or bipolar disorder.
