This sort of straddles subjects and looked interesting enough to place in Child Abuse, but I've also left a link in General Anxiety.

From a casual glance at the article, I'd definitely suggest you try to not let this freak you out. I've been terribly and obsessively afraid of cancer ever since I knew what it was (even as a small child, yes) and have seen my share of domestic troubles (and mild sexual abuse) as a minor, but even so I'm not going to let myself get bent out of shape over this. Again, I just glanced at it but it seems pretty obvious that this is going to be directly related to later-life habits that run a higher incidence in people who have had certain childhood traumas. Smoking, bad eating habits, and the like. And I'm sure something about general anxiety is down in that report somewhere. I'm walking proof what kind of toll anxiety takes on the body- so yes please try and be calm about this- because turning this into your worst nightmare certainly isn't going to help.

I get the idea a lot of what they address is going to turn out to be really quite preventable and as simple as don't smoke, (which I don't) and eat right (oops, well you got me there). And get help for stress and anxiety. Stay away from illicit drugs, etc.

The more you let something like this get under your skin, the more self-fulfilling it seems, to me. So we need to not let it cause us undue worry. I mean in the report they claim nearly half of all Canadians are going to have cancer sometime in their lifetime anyway (which seems rather high to me!) so I mean I could easily take this as I'm Doomed.

I could also (easily) obsess over an asteroid hitting the Earth but some things we just have to let go for the sake of our sanity. Try not to read too much into this study and take care of your body and try and have faith that the odds will be in your favor.

It is what Snags says. Child abuse can lead to alcoholism, drug addiction, and cigarette smoking would be in that. I have not read this anywhere but I also believe it is a factor for some people in obesity. All those things are factors in cancer. They are all able to be somewhat controlled by lifestyle modifications.

The big one though is heart disease. Living in a very high emotional environment leads to continual spikes in cortisol. This can lead to hardening of arteries. Again, if this is the case it can be countered by good nutrition and exercise.

Letting your childhood govern your adult life makes you a child abuse victim. Controlling your adult life so you can have the best life you can, despite the adversity makes you a child abuse survivor.
