Disturbing Behavior

Postby Kenneth » Wed Jul 18, 2012 11:58 pm

I'm not sure if this is involved in this forum, but I've been pretty disturbed by some people's contradictory behavior, especially in regards to racial issues.

I was on an online forum about ten years ago, and I mentioned that a few black people were poking fun at me for being Asian. I stated that I defended myself. However, people on that forum told me to edit my post in order to prevent offending black people. I refused, and another person said, "This is unhidden racism. Just because they insulted you, does that give you the right to insult them back? You know, I heard that Asian women were whores." When I called him in his hypocritical behavior, other members said, "Whoa, whoa, don't get angry Kenneth. He was just expressing his opinion."

It bothers me that his remarks about Asians were considered to be acceptable while my criticisms of blacks was viewed as blasphemy. What's even more disturbing was that no one realized he was contradicting himself.

Does anyone else come across people like this?

I have dealt with this issue a lot in regards to a double standard in therapist-patient relationships. I noticed when I was in therapy that any tension or misunderstanding that came up between me and my therapists was attributed to my emotional problems only as if the therapists' own emotional issues didn't contribute in any way.

In regards to Asians, I agree, there is an unspoken double standard that comes up often when there is an inter-racial conflict between blacks and Asians. Just recall this whole Linsanity story with Jeremy Lin. Somehow racists remarks against him were ok while they wouldn't have been tolerated if they'd been thrown at any other NBA player.
