Regarding Suicidal People

Postby Kenneth » Fri Jul 06, 2012 12:28 am

This actually belongs in the PTSD forum, but my computer crashes whenever I go there.

I've heard of people who want to commit suicide, blow their finances, only to realize they are too cowardly to commit suicide. When I was a teenager, I would have laughed at this, but now that I'm older, I realize that it is a serious issue. People who want to commit suicide but are too afraid to should not be made fun of, but helped.

I am neutral when it comes to suicide. I'm not for it, and I'm not against it. However, something needs to be done about these suicidal people because I've seen many of these types of people.

When I was in school, I recall a video where suicidal people were interviewed, and at the end of the movie, none of them (there were ten of them) actually committed suicide. Also, when I was in prison (I'm not a real criminal, I was innocent), I saw inmates pretending to hurt themselves to gain attention, only they were too afraid to really harm themselves.

This would be comic if not for the real suffering that is going on. Unfortunately, many people laugh at this type of suffering.

I'm making this post to spread awareness of the issue. Whether or not suicide is a positive or negative thing is not the issue. The issue is in helping people who are too afraid to do it.

Hi Kenneth,

Thank you very much for bringing up this topic. I have thought a lot about it myself and have come to understand that our society as a whole doesn't want to deal with this issue because it doesn't want to recognize the pain behind it. It's too scary for people to feel someone else's pain in general, and if the pain is so excruciating that it makes the person want to kill themselves, no one wants to be anywhere near that! Someone else's pain always touches our own pain and some one else's suicidality touches our own suicidality that we don't want to see and to admit that we have it. That's why people laugh at it. They laugh not because they find it funny but because they are petrified by this issue, because they don't have the courage and the strength to face it and to show compassion for the suicidal person. There is a very refreshing look on suicide in this article http://beyondmeds.com/2012/07/01/a-conversation-about-suicide/ I found it interesting. You might too.

I don't even know where exactly this topic belongs. It might belong to PTSD as well as bipolar as well as abuse or anything else, as being suicidal is a manifestation of a large variety of mental issues. It seems to me that this is just a big issue in and of itself, not necessarily linked to any disorder. So, it could as well stay here, at least for now.

I've heard more stories of people who killed themselves. It's just too unbearably depressing. That is in addition to the fact that I can't find a job and I am undergoing some extreme legal problems. Also, I have to live with the memories of the past. Sometimes, I wish I had amnesia.

The sad thing is, I think most people refuse to commit suicide because they are afraid to. A lot of people would scoff and say, "What cowards. They're pathetic." I dislike it when people are that cold. If I were to meet a suicidal person, I'd try to offer some help. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I could help even though I want to.

A lot of people including myself are suffering. I'm doing my best to fix the mistakes I've made throughout my life, but there are so many mistakes to fix.

There are so many horrible people out there. I've dealt with them throughout my entire life. Maybe it's because I live in a major city, but a lot of people don't deserve to exist.

All these feelings are perfectly understandable when we are in the dark place. I've had them many times too.
