Yet another bullied teen commits suicide. 15yo's dad on CNN this morning. And this Sparks, Nevada school shooter kid mighta been bullied. Has it always been like this and just not covered in national media, or is murder and suicide as a solution to being bullied some new trend?
Is it gun availability? I was bullied mercilously growing up but I didn't have access to guns. I was never suicidal or murderous about it though. When the bullying got physical, and it did, I hit back. So I'm left wondering are these poor souls just being raised not to fight back until it becomes too much and they grab a firearm? Are we raising kids to be so fearful of striking back that they feel they have no options but to take it? You'd think with all the video game violence that wouldn't be a problem. Is it just here in the US, or does this happen around the world? I don't think I've ever heard of a kid going on a shooting rampage anywhere else?

We don't touch as much as we used to. I think paranoia about sexual harassment or sex criminality has seen to that. Kids (and adults) are much more sedentary now with home theatres and videogames. And despite availability of sexual imagery and porn, we're actually more sexually repressed socially and legally than we were in the 50s. I think then seeing how much fun sex can be, but being denied it is causing an increase in violent outburst behaviours including murder and suicide.
Browing around the above site (which is a collection of related neuroscientific papers, some overly technical) I found my way to some latest research including this:

Excerpt:
Immediate early gene analysis and single unit recordings from VMHvl during social interactions reveal overlapping but distinct neuronal subpopulations
involved in fighting and mating. Neurons activated during attack are inhibited during mating, suggesting a potential neural substrate for competition between these opponent social behaviours.
Translation, when we have sex, brain cells we use when fighting are deactivated or prevented from being activated. So making love and not war makes it more likely we'll keep making love and reduces the chance of making war. In our society today with sex being increasingly taboo despite fantasy sex outlets like porn becomming easier to obtain, the denial of sex means the ability to act on violent thoughts is easier. Physiological equivilent being when we ejaculate (men) the ability to pee is lost as a 'valve' switches over blocking the one for the passing of the other.
Violent bullying then, like gay bashing behaviours, is bullies 'touching' their victims but in a violent, not sexual manner. Just as how the most homophobic men are also the most arroused by gay porn (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the ... -male-porn)
bullies are sexually repressed and acting out in this manner. If sexual expression and freedom were more widespread I wonder if such phenomenae would be as frequent.
