Chronic Bulimia

Postby help me » Fri Apr 01, 2005 1:47 pm

I have been a Bulimic for 25 years. Used laxatives excessively and vomiting to control my weight.
I do not eat much but because of this my metabolism has slowed down so much that if I do eat anything I tend to put on weight.
I desperately want to stop , but I dont know what the affects will be on my body if I suddently stop taking laxatives.
Will my body be able to cope. Will I be putting too much strain on my intestines and kidneys suddenly overloading them with food they are not used to having?

Please advise. Because I desperately want to live a normal life not being dependant on laxatives and being able to eat again.

Many thanks

Have you talked to a doctor about your concerns? Are you seeing a psychologist? If not, consult one soon. Also, see a psychiatrist. You should put an end to this, the sooner the faster. Also, you should know that weight can be controlled in a very healthy fashion, it's much easier than people think. And don't worry about the metabolism, there are ways to make sure that it will work very efficiently, besides smart selection of foods that make sure that your body burns at optimum. But let that for later. Right now you should start eating normally.

No seing a psychologist or psychiatrist is out of the question.
I am a very private person and I will get over this but it will have to be private and anonomous it will have to be.
I do know I need help , I do know I have a huge problem but getting help in person is not an option for me.

Well, see a doctor to ask him your questions about the laxatives. In the meantime, can you get some of your calories in liquid form? 500 ml of milk will provide you will 250 calories. Combine milk with nutrional supplements (you can buy them in pharmacies or at healthy food stores and they taste like chocolate milk shakes and they'll provide you with lots of proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins/minerals) to get more calories. 1 litre of fresh orange juice gives you about 450 calories. I bet you have lots of deficiencies, so the supplements will come handy. Also, you should get probiotics in your nutrition. Probiotics are friendly vacteria that help with digestion and boost the immune system. Probiotics are found in real yogurts (not the ones with the various colours and fruit tastes) or you can get them in pill form.

One thing to consider about milk is if you have lactose intolerance which is very common, milk can cause you annoying side effects, but nothing serious (but 500 ml of milk does not have a lot of lactose). Also, yogurt has less lactose and also provides the enzyme that helps digest lactose.

Finally you should add fibre in your diet, like in the form of vegetables.

Using laxatives in the long term may mean that if you quit taking laxatives you body may experience withdrawal symptoms. Even worse, it may take some time before your intestines will be able to function without laxatives and there is also the danger of permanent incapability of your intestines to function without them, but that probably happens rarely (you should really ask a doctor for this). On the other hand, use of laxatives can seriously harm you.

You should really speak to a doctor; he will tell you what you should do next. The important thing is that you have decided to end this damaging behaviour; things will get better in time.

It's time for me to de-bunk a popular myth among bulimics: laxatives don't make you thinner! If you weigh less on the scale afterwards, it's just because of all the poop and water that came out. The reason laxatives do not cause fat loss is because all the calories are absorbed in the small intestine, and laxatives have an effect on the large intestine only.

Anyway, keep taking those laxatives and your intestine will die and you'll have to walk around with a colostomy bag  Not to mention the possibility that you'll die with it  (bulimics who purge by conventional methods (read: you) have a 20% death rate)

A safer way to purge: dietary fiber pills. 8) They inhibit the absorbtion of calories during digestion. O.D. on those next time time you binge and hopefully they'll work! Just be sure to drink a shitload of water with them so they don't choke you, aiiight?
