Hey,

It's ironic but the more purging you do, the more likely you are to put on weight. You see, when you eat food, you allow your body's metabolism to be raised (because your body has to 'burn' the food). However, if you purge your food, your body receives little to nothing and it reverts to a sort of semi-hibernation mode. In this hibernation mode, your body's metabolism is reduced and you become lethargic. Your body also conserves as much fat as possible in this state because it thinks that it is being starved.

If possible, order healthy options from the restaurants. Also, if you don't feel like eating something, then don't. Don't let anyone force food onto you - people always do that and it's very annoying. Get used to the habit of rejecting people who offer you too much food.

Take care,
Kevin

I know this but it still doesn't stop me from purging or really wanting to, it's just the feeling of having food in my stomach disturbs me.

I've had Bulimia for over three years now and I needed professional help to get it at least under control a bit. You might need such help too... ...Have you told anyone about the problem? I never felt comfortable talking about it with my family, but I found it reasonably okay to talk to my therapist about it.

Take care,
Kevin

Hey again,

Your boyfriend's response is the classical reaction to an eating disorder by someone who doesn't have a clue what an eating disorder entails. Let me tell you right now that you are NOT stupid and it is NOT entirely your fault.

You know, your response is a classical one too: You don't think it's serious enough to warrant looking for proper help. People always do that, but then they only get help months down the line when they have all but ruined their lives because of the eating disorder. Trust me, it may seem small now but, if you don't take action now, chances are that this will end up consuming your whole life.

So, my message to you is to please tell someone about this who you know will care and understand. You can always arrange a private appointment with your local doctor, i'm sure, or is there a doctor you can see at college/school/work?

Take care,
Kevin

Selfharmlove: Please tell your therapist. He/She can really help you get through this. It's not worth keeping it a secret.
