anyone had success with prozac?

Postby greenfairy » Sun Jun 25, 2006 6:17 pm

I gave it a year but the bulimia never completely went away.
I stopped taking it 8 months ago because i figured I was drinking so much, I was making it ineffective anyway.
Now things have really gone down hill.
I wonder if it's time to give it another go.
I wonder if I am searching for a total cure that doesn't exist.

alcahol doesnt seem to have much effect on prozac or similar antidepressant meds
maybe try prozac at a higher dose this time, or you could try another type of antidepressant in the hope it may work better

I've had some success with effexor, 2. It helps stop the binges, anyway, and I've lost weight 2 since being on it... not sure how much tho.. I don't weigh myself, because i get obsessive. I think maybe i binge less because it acts as an appetite supressant more than anything else, but less bingeing means less purging, and that's got to be a good thing. It means I can concentrate more on dealing with the issues behind it.

If Prozac worked for you before, then it's def worth going back and trying again... There's no miracle cure, and you can't really overcome this until you face the issues behind your disorder, but the drugs can help. Discuss it with your psych. different drugs have different results of different ppl. good luck xx

prozac

Postby littlelight » Wed Jan 17, 2007 2:55 pm

i was taking prozac for 9 months before i decided the con's out-weighted the pros.
i was on 60mg a day and which is the standard dose for treating Bulima in the UK but if anything it made the over all emotional problems worse.
i didn't per say *think* about food as much, i certainly didnt binge.. but *forgetting* to eat become a common occurance.

Plus it was only while on prozac i began to self harm and got to the point where I overdosed in an attempted suicide, which resulted in 4 or maybe 5 seizures.

At the end of the day everyone is different and the drug has a different effect on each individual. Prozac wasn't the right route for me but the docs wouldnt prescribe it if it didn't work for most people.

i am not in favor of prozac at all.i have been trated with it twice at high doses and both times i was on it yes,i did stop binging but i also started self harming and attempted suicide,i lost a dangerous amount of weight and went to hospital for over 2 months.since off it i still battle with anorexia more so than bulimia these days but i do not self harm or have any urges to.i now take effexor which is good for anxiety but has VERY STRONG withdrawl effects so look into it all before you decide.good luck eartha xx

Hey there. I was put on it in 1990 when I was six. I took it until I was 17. All I can say is I really regret taking it so long. It was a band aid. I didn't deal with my issues, and they definitely came to a head and started ruling my life in young adulthood. I briefly took Prozac (60mg, for a few months) a couple years back, when my eating disorder and depression reached a peak. During those few months I made some life-changing decisions, and those decisions helped me re-orient my life in a more positive direction. I think SSRI's are great when taken for a few months, but horrible long-term. I think you will find that few months on them will give you a new perspective and a "lift" out of the fog so-to-speak. Long-term they don't work. I have seen it over and over. My mom has been taking Prozac her whole life and she is now has an auto-immune disease believed to be caused my inadequate coping mechanisms! Here everyday life is full of physical pain now - the physical manifestations of the emotional that is. You can't escape yourself. No drug will do it.
