How would you diagnise this person- BPD related

Postby CandaceW » Tue Feb 28, 2006 2:28 am

If a person went through an EXTREEMLY traumatizing/depressing ordeal for several years and he was severly depressed and very mildly psychotic, by the end, how should this be diagnosed? Depression and a psychotic break. Depression with psychotic features, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? The person did change right back to his normal self and led a normal sucessful life after the crisis was over, but the mild psychosis lasted for slightlly longer than 6 months during the event. I think that anyone could have ended up this way, not having to have tendencies toward a mental illness. Thank you VERY MUCH.

Hey Candace. :)

I do have a view on this but don't take it as fact as, like firnlothwen has said, we aren't doctors and we aren't professionals. We can't give diagnoses and the only way you're going to be able to get an accurate one is to see a doctor or a psychiatrist which I think you should do.

From my experience, it can be hard to diagnose this kind of thing. I went through some extremely traumatising abuse for seven years when I was younger and during this seven years I was hearing voices and seeing two people that no one else could, however part of me knew they weren't real.

I was admitted as an in-patient and no one could come up with a diagnosis. It flit between illnesses while I was there with each different psychiatrist which just proves how difficult the diagnosing stage of an illness can be. It went from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, to Bi-polar Disorder, to Psychotic Depression to an emerging personality disorder. I still haven't got a diagnosis that everyone is 'definite' on. You need to get this person to see a doctor so that they can get some help. Even if they aren't diagnosed right away, specific symptoms can be targeted with treatment.

I don't know whether I read this message wrong but as far as I can tell this person is back to normal now and has no problems? Even so, I still think it's best to see a doctor as if he's experienced an episode of psychosis then it could be a possibility that it may happen again. I hope this helped, good luck.

Trix.

EDIT; I've just realised how stupidly old this topic is but I still posted. I won't delete it just in case this post is helpful in any way but I'm sorry to contribute 6 years later!
