"mental disorders don't exist"

Postby elizabish » Sun Oct 21, 2012 12:44 am

my boyfriend is really pissing me off. he doesn't think that mental disorders exist. i usually can just accept his opinion but sometimes i really just wanna smack him.
like right now, i mentioned bipolar, and he said "it isn't even a thing that exists."
well, ###$ YOU mr.ASSPANTS

so, i was just wondering what you guys would say to someone who doesn't think depression/bpd/anxiety/add/bipolar/ocd/etc. exists?
cuz all i can think of is,
"THEY DO, YOU JERK."
i’ve cried and you'd think i'd better for it,
but the sadness just sleeps and it stays in your spine for the rest of your life.

This is something I personally would break up with a person over. I just cannot tolerate that kind of #######4. Just having somebody tell me that any of my problems/disorders are non-existent is VERY invalidating for me, and for me, it makes me feel like I am less of a person because there is something the matter with me.

I don't know if that makes any sense.

Honestly, I would just dump them. They obviously don't want to try and understand where you are coming from.

that makes sense, don't worry. :)
the thing is i really love him though, and i don't want this to get in between us!!! i just want him to realize how narrow minded he's being by ignoring the fact that they're real. you know? he's not a bad guy, he's just INFURIATING SOMETIMES.... sdljgkajsdkg

No, I know what you mean. I just personally don't like that kind of stuff. For me, a person I am with has to understand and be patient with the way I am. And when it comes to acceptance, they don't have to exactly accept how I am, just be able to tolerate and be willing to help me move through this. If they want to reject my condition or a disorder I have, then for me, it feels like they are rejecting a part of me that they do not approve or like. Which for me, does feel like abandonment.

I don't know. I sometimes feel like a giant walking bag of emotions...

Perhaps he's doing it to purposefully be argumentative?

Some people aren't sure how to deal with the reality of mental illnesses. They know of it as something that is used as a defense on Law & Order, but that's about it. When it comes into their world, it hits a little too close for many people, so a lot of folks stick their heads in the sand. If mental illnesses don't exist, then they don't have to deal with how close mental illnesses can hit to home.

Or, as CBear said, he's just trying to be argumentative.

As to how I'd deal with it, I'm with Ana. I'd give the person some time to come around, especially if I'd just dropped it on them. After all, it's a lot for someone to wrap their head around. However, if they'd known for a while what I've been diagnosed with, and were still denying that any of the things existed, then vaya con Dios.

if people cant see it or feel it, its easir for them to deny what exists. And alot of people will never recognize that mental disorders exist unit it hits their home. If your boyfriend ever breaks his arm or something, just tell him hes full of crap, its just in his head. :D
Caution, dyslexic writer ahead.
