So I'VW been undergoing treatment for bipolar disorder for, like, 6 years now, still urgent found a decent med cocktail, recently began undergoing ECT tx (which has helped tremendously, by the way), and was doing tolerable-- till yesterday. I started feeling myself get manic, so I called my psych office and they worked me in. As a result, I saw a new to me doc in the practice, who casually mentioned to me that I've also been diagnosed with BPD. I guess he saw the shock and confusion on my face, because he then began questioning me about it, like "did they ever tell you that, or,explain it?". I told him no, and then I got even more worked up. How long ago was a diagnosed? He only had the most recent notes, so he couldn't tell me for sure. He looked embarrassed, and kindly told me to research it when I got home, and immediately made a recommendation to start psychotherapy ASAP. SO I got home and went crazy on my Google homepage. From what I gather, this is supposedly a very stigmatizing illness, and when therapists consider you difficult, they just throw this dx on board. So do I really have ANOTHER illness I have to deal with, or does it just mean that I come across as a histrionic b#$*h? What is going on? More importantly, how do I make it better?
