Does Anyone recommend a BPD owning a dog?

Postby Battle Angel » Tue May 15, 2012 5:04 pm

Up until recently had a cat that died of old age. She was a good friend. I am thinkng its time for a dog.

It will be a change, for sure.

Are there any cons I am not thinking of?

My BPD is generally "under control". I have never abused an animal or anything like that ever.

Please respond.

get a dog. Sometimes we need something to put all out love into, and that will love us back on days that suck. :)

I think its a good idea too!

Maybe look into what breed/breed mix of dog tho. I have a large guarding breed and it has been a bit challenging to get him used to my moods, esp. anxiety - he picks up on my fear and goes around looking for the "threat" which has resulted in a number of innocent passersby getting a mighty WOOFing :-)

also, I'd recommend getting an older dog as opposed to a puppy - they can be very demanding.

all the best and keep us posted about future pooch!
Hopelessness is not the absence of something called hope. It is a belief in something: that the way things are is the best they are ever going to be.
Like any belief, this can be challenged...

I agree with Wineaux 100% on this!! Even if you've been gone five minutes, having a furball jumping around and wagging his tail like you've been gone for years is a great feeling. They're the height of loyalty, too. You may not be the center of the universe, but you are the center of theirs; they won't let you forget that. Plus, as leFay said, they're fantastic at reading people; they're even better than BPD'ers are. If you look like you need to snuggle, they'll come lay with you. If you want to get rough, they'll play. They're fantastic!

If you live in an apartment I recommend a small dog, and remember to take it for a walk everyday.

cats are easier to look after so if you own a dog make sure you have a backyard with fences and walk it each night.

Dogs are needy and loyal and would make you feel wanted though <3

Angel,

If you are a "Dog person" (not all people who like cats also like dogs), and you have the time and place to look after a dog - go for it.

If you had a place that had a cat and don't have room for a big dog... Just get a little doggie.
With a smile I'm dying inside but I know I'll be just fine
I saw love not lies but I could be mistaken
Now you've gone and I dry my eyes and I'm here for the taking tonight
Feel the need for somebody tonight, I could love you forever tonight

Absolutely! I have two small dogs (maltese x cavaliers) and they are the best companions in the whole wide world! Smaller dogs are more needy which is good for people with BPD as we need constant affirmation of our worth. I know! Small dogs need a lot of attention but you get back sooooo much love and affection for the time you put in looking after them. Just walking through the door and have them greet you is one of the things I truely care about.

If you get a puppy be prepared though for about 1 months sleepless nights (that's if you do normally get sleep)and around 1 year until they are fullly trained.

Many times, they've actually been the only ones there for me and stopped me taking that final step and giving up on the world. It also gives you focus on giving back to others, having a semi structured day (walk in morning and night). It has taught me about Caring, Connecting and Contributing. I care for them deeply, connect with them and contribute back to them. These 3 c's are what gives you purpose.

Take care x
