Diets, exercises and supplements

Postby Keys » Tue Apr 10, 2012 11:05 am

I was wondering how many of you have tried to adapt your diet/exercise regime in the aim of improving physical and mental health. I was vegetarian for years, but a few weeks ago I finally caved and began to eat oily fish after hearing a lot of health professionals recommend it for the fatty acids, which can help the heart and brain.

In terms of exercise, I've always loved cycling but have decided to do a long cycle every weekend from now on. I'm also taking up yoga, and I play squash.

Obviously all of these ideas have to come with a huge disclaimer that BPD takes far more than any supplement, sport or even medication can give to see any improvements (it's shocking that I even have to say this, but unfortunately alternative medicine is a big business and I've heard people make silly claims) However, I see no harm in trying them out under medical supervision alongside therapy. Do you make any special efforts to keep in shape and eat well?
Undiagnosed, meeting 8/9 criteria for BPD for 6 years now (yes, I have unwittingly used the phrase "I hate you, don't leave me" before I knew it was a book).
Determined to fight for mental health.

I find that walking with an iPod at night helps me.

I wouldn't say that I do anything special to keep myself in shape (because at the moment, I'm not in shape), but...

I make an EXTREME effort to make sure that I get in as many vegetables as possible. Daily.

I do eat fish (when I was young, I flat-out refused to), and at dinner, I make a salad that looks more like a buffet - green peppers, red peppers, yellow peppers, green onions, white onions, mushrooms, carrots, etc.) because I think that the more nutrition that you EAT is better than any vitamin pills that you ingest.

Also - I am a HUGE milk addict. I drink a gallon a week, sometimes more (skim).

But regardless, other than making sure my veggie quotas are met, I don't do anything special.

I tried the bee pollen pills, but they were essentially a huge laxative.
