Medication for BPD

Postby B1g_Ben » Mon Nov 28, 2011 11:50 pm

Hi,

I'm wondering what meds are helping others with BPD? Does anyone know if Cipralex would or does help with BPD signs and symptoms?

Any help and information would be greatly appreciated!!

My med list is in my signature.

The most helpful medication I've come across is actually Prozac. Haldol has been really helpful as needed. I haven't heard much success with other SSRIs like cipralex (Lexapro). The review I've found on the net are, for the most part, not very hopeful for Lexapro, but some people found it helpful. If you do try Lexapro, keep a close eye on your suicidal ideations and urge to self harm.

I also might be trying thorazine in the near future. I'll let you know about that one.

RX: Prozac

I tried almost every SSRI and SNRI available, and all helped for about 6 weeks, and then stopped. My psychiatrist explains it as me being medicinally resistant.

I went cold turkey for a while, but anxiety was constant and terrible. Constant panic disorder.

I'm two days into a new regime of xanax(for anxiety), mirtazapine(to sleep), and abilify(as an antipsychotic)

Hopefully this mix won't lose its effectiveness like the others.

A lot of people seem to take a mood stabiliser or an antipsychotic of some sort with BPD, I've noticed.....aswell as an antidepressant(if needed) and an anti anxiety(if needed)
Self awareness doesn't reveal my indiscretions, exhaustion does.

I take Lamictal (mood stabalizer) and Klonopin (anxiety).

I imagine it helps, but I've been on it for so long I don't really remember what it was like being off of it. There's a lot of in the forum that take lamictal. The nice thing about it is there's a good possibility that you won't have any side effects.

ive tried a couple of SSRIs but the side effects were kinda annoying, mainly made me extremely sleepy.. now im on moclobemide (reversible MAO inhib) which at first i was on 300mg/daily and wasnt really feeling it, then recently have gone up to 600mg and im feeling a lot better, i dont react to things the way i used to in a borderline way and side effects are minimal, little bit of an insomniac now though.. however have been trying melatonin which has a nicer sleepy effect vs. benzos etc ..

you have to give them a chance though.. anti deps have short and long term effects in the brain that are kinda opposite and you need to wait for the long term effects to kick in before youll get the anti depressant effect .. the short term effect can be an increase in energy etc that will make you feel better until that wanes.. also some people are just completely resistant to anti dep treatment and nothing will ever work

i find antipsychotics are good to chill me out when i have an episode, but then if ur using them on rare occasion all theyll do is knock you out, because again theres short/long term effects

benzos.. e.g. valium.. i found were excellent for my anxiety but super addictive and i went off them

am also on contraceptive pill which seems to tone down my aggression..

so overall being on moclobemide at 600 mg/day has helped with my anxiety, im not as easily triggered and i just dont feel as overall crap as i used to so i can recommend that one :)

I insisted upon most of the meds I take due to Dr. Leland Heller's book "Life at the Border." He recommends, and I take, the SSRI Prozac, the mood stabilizer Tegretol, and for dysphoria/bad times extra Tegretol, a small dose of Haldol, and if needed Risperdal. Zyprexa is also recommended for a bad spell but I am so overweight already I have a hard time getting doctors to script it.

My Ativan is due to anxiety; Dr. Heller advises against Xanax because it can worsen behavior in borderlines. That definitely happened to me. I take Halcion to sleep, but I suspect it may be too similar to Xanax in causing anger in borderlines.

Ritalin is not ideal for the borderline with ADHD because it can be easily abused (I don't though.) But I don't have insurance and I pay $9.99 for Ritalin. If I could get into the free meds program for Vyvanse, I'd give that a try; it is recommended for BPD and ADHD because it cannot be abused.

Hope this helps and good luck!

GOD I hated Abilify...
That and Risperdone...
Me and antipsychotics equal horrific nightmares and fog.

I had good results with Topamax (anti-seisure mood stabilizer) and an as needed script for Xanax (for panic attacks and random fits of... whatever) and temazepam for sleep.
I've cut out the Topamax, now. It was really hard to start... like 2 weeks of hell... but once I was adjusted it was fine. I just don't need it at this point.

Lots of meds are cross panel, though. What's been listed here could easily be transfered to Bipolars and a number of other things. Everyone responds differently.
