Has anyone tried Provigil? (monafidil)

Postby Z1t23ch3 » Sat Jun 18, 2011 9:41 pm

All anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, and what ever else they gave me have been COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY INAFFECTIVE. I can't stress that enough. However, I've stumbled across this yesterday and wonder if anyone has used it. Some things that have held me back is my adhedonia, ennui, and general what's-the-pointedness. I wonder if this could take the dingy film off my life so to speak. If it could make feel alert and awake, then I think there is a sort of psychological effect with that. Not ?-necessarily? as an antidepressant, but I've read about it being used more as an augmenter.

I've been reading around and I'm real curious. If anyone has ANY info or experience, then please reply.

My girlfriend is on it for Chronic Daytime sleepiness. Different situation, so I won't advise on the primary effects you seek, but from a side effects perspective, it seems fairly benign. She has to be a little more careful with her caffeine intake now, as she becomes heavily overstimulated if she has too much.

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I should post in depression.

If you don't mind my asking, what have you been prescribed, for what, and how did it make you feel?

I know that Adderall/Methylphenidate are occasionally prescribed for very treatment resistant depression. Someone in the depression forum may know more about that. It's pretty rare though.

EDIT: I tried one of my GF's Provigils once, and it feels a lot like Adderall. I have ADHD, so for me it settled me down.

Well, I can't tell you ALL I've been on. However, It was a LOT of different things. Probably everything. For depression, bi-polar, and schizophrenia. After more than a year of going, I ended up doing ECT, which I was told was basically the end of the line. After all other options, you do ECT. In any case, like I said in the opening post, nothing. Nothing, NOTHING, was at the least bit effective at any time. I am not exaggerating at all when I say that. I may as well have been taking sugar cubes. So I may have that very rare case. After ECT they wanted to drill holes in my skull and implant electrodes. Which is basically like ECT-which failed-except with holes drilled into my skull. I declined.

I didn't think that Provigil would feel like a stimulant though. It surprises me that you say that.

Do you mean, Modafinil?

Yes, I am the one who suggested it to my anti-depressant drug pushing psychiatrist who is terrible at building rapport. It's the only thing that has worked for me so far in terms of motivation. Giving me the energy to get through any lethargy. Though I am only on 100mg and apparently it goes up to 800mg in terms of allowed dosage. I am moving up to 200mg. I am a fan of Nootropics in general more than I am for SSRI's. The only way to know if it's really useful to you is to try it. I currently don't take any other meds other than Modafinil for some time. Though this is the effect it has on me, no one can tell you what effects it will have on you. Diet is also important. Learning self discipline in the areas you need in order to push yourself though might be possible with a nootropic. I force myself to do a lot of things I don't care to do to improve my life or find a lifestyle that is more fitting in general. I have plans to travel to see what that looks like exactly. Maybe some of us are nomadic in nature for whatever reasons. I like feel that since BPD looks very different for each person diagnosed, it is not really well understood. Things like DBT and mindfulness help some while for me, it's just having good company or good experiences in general to balance the ones that aren't great. I got rid of most people in my life who were likely narcissists and been better for it. That included any/all family who were always a toxic influence on my life. So you see it isn't just the modafinil itself. Take into consideration everything you have within you the power to change. 'Smart drugs' might help by boosting your cog function in areas where depression hits. Making you better able to come up with even more solutions. Over all I noticed more energy and motivation to do undesirable 'pointless' things. So that is my current conclusion.
