Treating people with BPD with utter contempt

Postby bpsychd » Fri May 20, 2011 2:08 pm

In my work as a clinical skills trainer, part of the course I deliver explores the stigma people with BPD experience. I just read a thread about bullying and this kind of thing is so much more widespread. Firstly, so-called "professionals" are full of negatively associated terms, phrases and sweeping generalisations, that, if I hadn't learned to see them as limited in their knowledge, could trigger me off in ways that would keep my illness alive. I look at them these days with a gaze of pity, because even though highly trained "doctors" and metal health professionals should know better, simply, they don't.

What really gets me going with a slap in their face is to label THEM as having the same traits and maladaptive schemas that people with BPD all have. The trouble is, somewhere along the line, others who do bully have neglected to realise that they wouldn't bully an emotionally abandoned, abused, maltreated child, so why do they assume that just because an apparent adult is in front of them, that it's okay? My answer to this is FEAR. They will use whatever tactics to feel better about themselves, consciously pushing away the fact that these professionals, and many others alike, do self sacrifice and subjugate (think nurses) in much the same way as anyone with PD does.

I enjoy the power I contain to press buttons in professionals; police officers, probation staff, nursing staff, psychiatrists and psychologists and kindly remind them that they went into their profession because that's what feels safe for them, they do that because it confirms their core beliefs. As for mindless net thugs, I contend that exploring their motivations will uncover hidden problem areas than giving these people the satisfaction and recognition they need to appear "great".

Where there should be understanding, fear has taken place and it's totally unacceptable. We, as BPD sufferers have so much more to give, and if we can take responsibility for ourselves, we can excel. I am now a psychlology student, a committee member for a nationally recognised professional council, a youth mentor, an expert by experience clinical skills trainer, putting right draconian training of the past and I hold my head high.. Because those who get a kick from making fun are truly limited. So take pity, don't fall into their games.

Wait, when you enjoy the power to press buttons, aren't you falling into the same games?

Good for you that you are having so many accomplishments, but when you put up posts like this, aren't you showing us that you are falling into the same traps that you are complaining about?

Just food for thought. Not trying to be rude to you at all. Peace.
