What do you think we are good at?

Postby OntarioGothic » Mon Jul 09, 2018 4:14 am

Genuinely curious what do you think is the positive or redeeming traits of our personality disorder. Obviously, incredibly fun and amazing self-destructive traits are a given.

However, feel like most BPD people are very socially aware and emotionally intune. Anyone agree or disagree? What are YOUR thoughts on this?

I think because of my disorders I'm way more intense in personal relationships, which is a great trait with the right amount of self awareness, communication and person imo/e. I've never met a borderliner who wasn't intuitive and creative in some way. Most I've known were for example very sensitive to trends. However I don't know if you could really call this borderline specific since there are enough people out there who have these traits but not borderline or even a personality disorder.

at our best: depth of feeling, dramatic expression, idealism
at our worst: manipulation, feigned helplessness, victimhood
previously: pleasnpetrichor, perejil

my bpd friend once said bpd is an ailment n like most other ailments, bpd doesnt really have any benefits.
sure we can google it up and find for some 'benefits' or 'superpowers'. i used to do it n i would think the bpd makes me special/cool.

but now i dont think so. it is an ailment n i dont think it makes us good at anything. maybe we're more compassionate cause we understand the other person's perspective and are not rigid in our beliefs.

I'm pretty damn good at reading people. I have been described as having a "sixth sense" when it comes to reading people and situations-give me 5 minutes and I pretty much have a person or the room I'm in sussed out but proper. I feel the same way about energies given off by places, too.

For a long time I didn't think this had anything to do with my BPD, but the more I read the more I realize it does. We are good at mirroring others emotions, and that takes a keen eye. I think it has become even sharper for me in my later years, as I can tell immediately whom I will or will not "connect" with in ways that I need.

Of course all of that gets skewed once I feel I've become vulnerable to them. Then I can't read them a damn bit of worth, because I am so wrapped up in my lack thereof.

I do think this is a bit of a super power, though. It has kept me out of some sticky and downright stupid situations, cause I could see it coming from a mile off.

Surviving. Fighting. Falling seven times, standing up eight. After all, that's why we're still here.

Experiencing feelings more intense than non-borderliners. BPD makes us sensitive, and besides all the pain related to this, there's also the positive sensitivity. E.g. with regards to interpersonal relationships, when we're willing to give all of ourselves to the person we love, or regarding creativity when we express our intense feelings in the form of art.

And we know how to truly worship the times when we're happy. Because of the extreme mood swings, the chronic emptiness, the loneliness, the boredom, and the depression caused by BPD, we are able to appreciate the good times - be it just a few hours - all the more: because we don't know when the happiness and contentment will leave us nor when we'll feel this good again.

Reading vibes in social situations, as well as self-reflection. Just lacking some self-control, I guess.

I'm hopeful.

Mind over matter; matter undermined. ;)
