DBT possible without actual therapy?

Postby Lebkuchen » Wed Feb 01, 2017 12:08 pm

Hey. Just wanted to ask a short question. Can you actually do full DBT without having actual therapy sessions? I don't have a therapist or something along those lines.

Well I unknowingly had BPD for the past 25 years and I managed to learn the skills necessary to live without DBT skills training - I guess I learned them from experiencing life and reading self help books and writing in my journals about things I wanted to change and learn about myself to make life better.

There are lots of books to learn the skills - so I am sure you could do a lot of it yourself - you just wouldn't have the therapist to help you practice the skills with you every week with stuff that is going on in your life.

Mmm this is good to know. I'm on a waiting list for DBT and told it could be 6 weeks or more before I get a place. I'm reading a good book right now about Complex PTSD it really covers a lot of the issues bpd and npds suffer from. Some great exercises in it too. Thinking of buying a DBT workbook after this one.

Munchh - I bought a book called Coping with BPD - (it has a rose on the cover) and I never looked at it until last night. It is really useful - they have an index with problems a borderline could face, then they tell you what the problem looks like and how to help yourself. I was hoping my BPD daughter would read it when she gets upset, but she wasn't interested. I think if she is having a problem with a friend or something, I will go read the part to her or talk to her about what I read to help her.

Mhh I did some worksheets which seem to come from some therapy on DBT in the past. I gotta try picking up a whole book on it.

Oh that book looks good @Triplemoon. I've put it in my amazon basket for when I've finished this PTSD one. Got to feel like I'm doing something whilst I'm waiting!

PS - OP I saw this link on another thread, it's got some cool DBT exercises and explanations
