Medication help?

Postby bpd-rose » Mon Jul 25, 2016 2:58 am

Hello! I am currently once again going through the hell of having to find a medication regimen that works for me and my many mental illnesses. I have BPD, bipolar II, ADHD with sensory issues and GAD. I do not react well to SSRIs (they make me impulsive and intensify my emotions even more than I already naturally feel them). I am currently on 100 mg of a mood stabilizer called seroquel and everytime I increase the dosage I have a really good reaction but then it levels off, does anyone know of any medication that won't do this? I am also on 75 mg of zoloft which I absolutely hate and want to get off of and 20 mg of adderall. Thanks!

Seroquel is an anti-psychotic medication, though it can help some with moods. The thing with medication is it effects everyone differently so this is something you're probably best speaking to your doctor about. What works great for someone here might be terrible for you.

I don't take any medication for my BPD - just sleeping tablets which I've been on for years. So can't really help, sorry

I know what you're saying/feeling. I've tried celexa, lexapro, lamictal, effexor, wellbutrin... none of them worked for me. I just got prescribed trileptal and have only been on it for a few days. So far it's been alright. I'll let you know once it's been a couple weeks. Things work differently for everyone but I recognized a lot of what I've felt in the past in your post, so hopefully my experience can help you.

I'm sure you already know they say there's no real medication for BPD, just meds for the concurrent disorders. I'm on 300mg of Welbutrin for depression/concentration issues and 25 mg Lamictal for mood stabilizing. (Also since a potential side effect of Welbutrin is seizures and Lamictal was originally prescribed for seizure prevention it's kind of a brilliant mix.)

I've tried Prozac - which immediately was apparent it was not for me (I had daily crying spells for hours on end.) Lexapro + Seroquel was helpful towards the end of college, but I gained about 50 lbs.

Welbutrin is awesome to me because I am also super into fitness, so the weight loss and increase in energy is amazing. Getting adjusted to Welbutrin was tough because it can heighten anxiety. To combat the anxiety - and I'm not saying I recommend this, just explaining my procedure - I also smoke weed. But I've been using for a really long time and if I were to stop smoking at this point it would probably do more damage than good. But if you haven't been a daily smoker for a decade, I would advise against it because I've heard the combination can induce really bad episodes and panic attacks. In which case you might want to get something else for anxiety, or you might just luck out and not face the anxiety side effect.

Lamictal helps me curb the mania that Welbutrin could put me in. As you also probably can imagine one of my worst symptoms is severe rage. Since going on my regime of Welbutrin + Lamictal + weed, I have not had a rage episode. But we'll see...

Good luck finding your combo! I'm happy to share what I know in effort to help!
