That's DSM IV. In DSM V, to be diagnosed with BPD, one must have pervasive abandonment fears. I think it's so central to the disorder, along with affect dysregulation and identity disturbance, that you probably don't have BPD without those three.

To answer your question, this is a good place to start: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23130809

Ok but I remember a while ago, my shrink told me I have abandonment anxiety but not abandonment fear.

Also, I do think that some borderlines are a way too independent probrably due to an compensatory mechanism. Think of Matt Damon's Will Hunting, is not him a perfect example of the impulsive borderline as portrayed in ICD (or Millon Subtype)?

Ps. I do think ICD two subtypes of emotionally unstable model is better than DSM IV borderline model but that is whole new topic.

I keep reading that a large percentage of people diagnosed with one PD will have another comorbid one, or traits of another one. However, I asked my CPN about this and he hasn't really seen anyone diagnosed with two and he's been working in mental health for years.

Has anyone here been diagnosed with BPD and another PD?

I have been diagnosed with 2 PDs - just not at the same time.

For my part I am terribly independant - I will rarely allow myself to rely or depend on anyone. I was first diagnosed with AvPD because I am so good at avoiding relationships. Part of that is the fear of being engulfed I think, but also a fear of needing to be dependant on someone. If I were to depend on anyone I would start to fear abandonment. And for me that is worse than being alone.

I am now diagnosed with BPD.

I'm DX'd with 2 PDs though I'm not sure it's accurate. I do meet most of the criteria for AsPD, but I still think I just have some traits and not the full blown PD...not anymore at least.

What's the difference between abandonment anxiety vs fear? Sound similar to me.

Anyway, abandonment anxiety is extremely common among those with anxiety disorders. I read a study where 20% of the population suffer from it on a regular basis.

I think in many people, abandonment anxiety stems from low self-esteem rather than PD issues.

anxiety:
a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.

301.83 Borderline Personality Disorder
A pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:
(1) frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment.

Diagnostic criteria for 301.6 Dependent Personality Disorder
A pervasive and excessive need to be taken care of that leads to submissive and clinging behavior and fears of separation, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:
(3) has difficulty expressing disagreement with others because of fear of loss of support or approval.
(8) is unrealistically preoccupied with fears of being left to take care of himself or herself

To me, I am constantly scanning the environemnt to watch signs of abandonment but I dont fear the abandonment. If it comes I'll get over it, I can stand up by myself.

Anxiety show up more as anger than fear on my case. I guess this the fight part of flight and fight response.

Would you say perhaps you have more rejection anxiety? Does this hypervigilance happen across all contexts or just with specific people?

To some degree all people, but to a higher degree those I have to rely on like customers, boss, sister;
