I don't understand why most people list pop music when asked what makes them happy. Once in a while I'll come across a somewhat silly pop song that makes me happy, but most of the time it's just annoying to me. I usually crave much heavier stuff, whether it's silly or serious, rock or hip-hop.

It must have something to do with being an introvert.

It has to do with fast rhythm = joy/anger/energy and personal taste (pop, rock, rap, r'n'b, classical, etc.)

The slower the rhythm the less joyful we get regardless of the style.

To no small surprise, my list contains a lot of loud music (with potentially some NSFW lyrics, too). Warning - some of these songs may cause your hair to grow 1-2' and tattoos to appear on your arms and neck. Image

Motörhead
Mötley Crüe
Hellyeah
Beatles
  • Helter Skelter. For two reasons. One, McCartney wrote it solely to be louder than The Who, after Townsend called "I Can See For Miles" the loudest song ever recorded, and two, at 4:24, it has the single most classic line in rock history - "I've got blisters on my fingers!": https://youtu.be/QWuXmfgXVxY
A-ha
Beastie Boys
David Bowie

Dropkick Murphys
[*]Kiss Me I'm Sh*tfaced. It's funny. I especially get a kick out of the line "I can bench press a car, I'm an ex-football star, with degrees from both Harvard and Yale. Girls just can't keep up, I'm a real love machine, I've had far better sex while in jail!": https://youtu.be/CBa-5gZRHJ8

Ko
Sadly, Ko has only put out one album to date ("Let's Blaze") but it's one of the few albums I can listen to, start to finish. A lot of it may trigger, so be warned before you check more out, but if you're not feeling particularly vulnerable, "Kurt Kobain" is a pretty cool acoustic piece.
  • Moving Mountains. The subject material is about trying to get off drugs (something a lot of us are familiar with), but it's upbeat and not in some preachy way.: https://youtu.be/24YjgWrIdr0

Pantera

Tool
  • Forty Six & 2. An amazing song! There's one fill where the drums, guitar and bass are all playing different time signatures. https://youtu.be/Tja6_h4lT6A

Students of Aaron O'Keefe

These kids train at a music school run by Aaron O'Keefe in Ohio, and cover a number of big name songs. They do it quite well, too! The singer in 46 & 2 (Karla Scarpinski, aka Karla Rose) has started her own band, but still works with the school, as well.

These are as uplifting for the videos and watching the kids have fun rocking out, as much as it is for the content of the songs and the quality thereof.

  • 46 & 2 (Tool cover): https://youtu.be/mYKLvYGqaC0
  • You Could Be Mine (Guns n' Roses cover) A total girl rock-out. The bassist does okay, but the drummer and the female singer completely bring it. I first thought the singer was cute, then she nailed the "miiiine yeah!" at the end and finished it off with that burst of laughter and I knew I was in love. Her cuteness aside, I actually like her vocals on this song better than Axl's - I never really liked this song before. https://youtu.be/XT8upWEDirM

I'm sure there are more, but I think I've taken up enough server space for now.

I'm usually pretty critical of cover tunes, but these guys did a great job of a classic song!

Yeah, this one ranks up there, too. Heck, everything from the "Licensed to Ill" album does!

I love this song, but I can't listen to it; it's waaaay too triggering to me. It sucks, too, as this is probably one of the greatest collaborative songs out there.

I know what you mean. But, the heavy stuff evokes stronger emotions which aren't exactly "happy" to me. It's just feeling. For example, the following can make me happy, but its meaning can put me in a funk:

Caviar, Lioness (Lyrics).

On the other hand, how can anyone be in a funk after listening to Long Beach Dub Allstars - Sunny Hours (Lyrics):

I'm the same way. And, I think that one's better than the original. The original addressed the Sunset Strip curfew riots (1966). The Candy Canes updated it to modern challenges. For me, I identify it with my narcissistic mentality, the "inner critic" (approaching everything in a heightened state of alert, prepared for defense, "rules are rules," being a "square").
I never seen you looking so bad my funky one / You tell me that your superfine mind has come undone (Steely Dan, Any Major Dude)

40 Day Dream - Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
https://youtu.be/_7nD1T7mjp8
"I have seen too much, felt too much, loved too much in my life; I come to seek, still living, the calm of Lethe. Lovely place, be for me those banks of oblivion: to forget is my only happiness."

The Crash Test Dummies pretty much always make me smile, no matter when or where I happen to hear them. Idk, I think it's the combination of his voice and the lyrics-

I can listen to music without caring too much about the lyrics. To me there's nothing horribly melancholic about that song in a musical sense. Now Kid A. by Radiohead can put me in a funk because the music is just weird and dark and a bit insane. Well, National Anthem is kind of upbeat, but still super dissonant.

On the other hand, how can anyone be in a funk after listening to Long Beach Dub Allstars - Sunny Hours (Lyrics):

Okay. I like that song. There's some soul to it though. It's not just mindlessly happy. Reminds me of Sublime.
