It is interesting that you ask this right now. I went to an Al-Anon meeting today, and the reading we had dealt with the exact meaning of the phrase "to take offense." We willingly take offense. We don't have to have it. For me this is really true. If I don't want to take distressing action, I don't have to. It's my choice. I just need to remember to ask myself, "Is it really worth it?" I am finding that if I "Let Go and Let God," God does take care of it.
Last week I had to go to a meeting that I knew would be draining. It dealt with a very controversial matter, and there were just as many people "for" and "against." The meeting was not to exceed 60 minutes. I gave my viewpoint during the first 10 minutes. I continued to listen for 45 of the 60 minutes before I decided that, if I stayed any longer, I would start raising my voice and getting ugly. So, I opted to leave quietly. Later in the day a colleague said, "Man, after you walked out, people sobered up. The entire group came to a solution by the end of the 60 minutes." All I could think was that I really had nothing to do with it. I Let Go, and God worked the rest. It was amazing.
