'Nice' music

Postby Ophelia333 » Thu Dec 19, 2013 4:58 pm

Bit of a random one but my DBT therapist has advised me to listen to 'nice, relaxing' music when I'm feeling sad/angry/anything negative really, as part of distraction techniques. My general tastes are pretty much rock/metal and anything chilled I listen to tends to be massively depressing. I literally can't think of any music/artist that doesn't end up triggering a negative emotion in me... I've only just realised this weirdly enough :? Just wondering if anyone has any musical suggestions! Anything relaxing, chilled out etc but that's not full of sad lyrics... I can't think of anything!

air's talkie walkie is the first thing that comes to my mind. it's very mellow and relaxing. I personally also love classical music, especially chopin, beethoven, and satie.

cool! yeah, air is really good. I also love pink floyd, although some of their lyrics can be quite depressing. I'd say obscured by clouds is a good choice for floyd music that is lovely and mellow without being too much of a downer. I tend to gravitate towards melancholy music, too. but listening to stuff like that can definitely make you feel worse at times.

I tend towards music like Emery no matter how I feel, so this topic should be an interesting one.

Haha, that being said, Ophelia, I went through my music collection and realized some of the best "relaxing" music I own comes out of video games or anime. The soundtrack for Okami is absolutely gorgeous. I know in-game, this piece was one of my favorites when running around on the field. Also this one! And to round it off with three, one of my favorite shorter pieces was this one. :)

Bateman, yes Floyd is definitely a winner. I'll give obscured by clouds a listen, thanks :) when I'm feeling particularly rubbish I tend to blast Wish You Were Here and end up an emotional wreck. Definitely not the way to go!

Hey Wolfesque thank you for the suggestions :) I've never heard of Emery, I'll have to look this up! I thought the links you posted were beautiful. I'd never usually listen to pieces of music but I'm going to start. I especially liked the third one.

You're welcome! Anime and video game music isn't the norm for me either, but it's so nice for when you want something that's not quite classical. :) That third piece is my favorite off the whole soundtrack! Compared to the scenes it plays with in the game, it's this awesome rejuvenation, of coming out of darkness into light. :D I know the entire album is up on Youtube. Search "Okami Soundtrack" and you should find it. I think it's something like 185 songs.

Another game series that comes to mind with beautiful music is the original four PS2 .hack//Games. The track for one of the servers, Mac Anu is so nice and soothing.

Emery is my all-time favorite band! Their album, The Question, is my go-to for strong emotions. It's a satirical album, asking the question, "Where were you when I was _______?" (and then fill in the blank with each song title, respectfully! ) Good stuff, though I love all five of their full albums...and all of their music, really! <3

EDIT: I just want to throw out a trigger warning on some of Emery's music because they do talk quite often on relationships, depression, suicide, and other such "difficult" topics in BPD.

Glenn Gould playing Bach's "Goldberg Variations" centres me. Makes me calm.

I listen to classical music myself.

It doesn't have to be boring. Honestly some of it really is... but then, some of it is dramatic and exciting... or somber, but doesn't have all of those triggering lyrics, you know?

Personally, I love the Romantic era... it was all about emotion and expression. I would give a listen to Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique, Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto no. 1, and his Violin Concerto as well, Dvorak - New World Symphony, Liszt - Piano Concerto no. 1 and no. 2.
