I know many who would score low on both

I haven't been given an IQ test since grade school.
However, I was recently accepted into my college's Honors Program. I've done well in difficult courses such as Psych.
I suppose this would imply that my IQ is not below average or anything.

Never did an IQ test, but I was fluent in English at the age of 11 ( not my first language ) and I didn't moved to the UK before I was 20 or spend my childhood in an English speaking environment.
Also never tried Swedish before September and now I can save my butt in 9/10 conversations, if they aren't too fluently spoken. Also did well in German at school and Dutch scoring 85%+, however I always sucked at math, but I was good with those ''insight'' tests on a computer when I applied for a job stage a few years back and was one of the few to score 90+ solving puzzles and questions like '' which numbers goes here : 1 3 6 15 29 x. ( not a real one  )
I have to confess however that Swedish and German are closely linked to my first language, as all 3 are ''Germanic'' languages, however they are all different in many words and pronouncing them, so I don't know if I can pin my Swedish and German skills on being smart.

Also I got no clue if using big words in my ''not native language'' and good ''surround'' awareness have any ties to IQ, I always told myself that the first one had to do with my language center in my brain and the awareness thing came from having BPD.

94th or 95th percentile on the standardized tests I've taken thus far.

EQ has always been kinda iffy, but that's maybe because of my ADHD. The cognitive deficits due to ADHD mean that I am not very perceptive with social cues - am capable of violating someone's personal space without realizing.

But, IQwise, I am pretty good with conceptualization, abstraction, and generalization of patterns.

If dopamine is implicated in pattern recognition, it stands to reason that excessive dopamine activity in one region and low activity in another would make you deviate from the norm.
Forgive and forget. Nothing is worth wasting the day.

156. My therapist tells me I'm grad school material. II told him, it's a shame I'm nuts. I love to study. I'm very creative. I can't apply these gifts to anything due to my disorder, although this may be just me being pessimistic right now. I have stayed up a couple nights with the insane anxiety, sadly wondering who I could be in alternate realities. Who/what would I have been if I didn't have BPD.

wow another genius.

ok, maybe i am being pessimist, but is it possible that these iqs are deliberately raised to sort of motivate people to achieve certain things?

like 'you're failure at many things which is why you're in my office; you don't have much going for you so I am going to tell you your iq is high so you are inspired to pursue something else other than what you've been doing for the last x number of years which is not working..'

i say this, because i have personally found that some of my 'issues' are sort of hidden in certain environments, like educational achievement.

so these iq tests might serve as encouragement to go down certain paths, those more favourable to some PDs?

Crystal interesting idea but I kind of doubt it.

I scored high on both SAT and GRE. Those could not be "fixed." They never even told me my IQ score, just said I was "bright." 8)

Sometimes I feel so dumb though.

You have to consider the demographic under study. This is an internet forum, so the average IQ is already about 110, as the vast majority of people don't spend their free time reading and writing psych topics. Next, you are dealing with individuals who are self-aware of a very debilitating mental illness, which takes an enormous amount of cognitive ability, and most are likely on the high-functioning spectrum.

How IQ tests are administered is unfortunately variable. A psychologist has no reason to lie to you, if they value their professional integrity and reputation, as you have to pay good money to get one done and it takes several hours. There are no services a psychologist can provide someone with a high IQ anyway. IQ tests are often diagnostic too, and most are performed on high-achieving children to place them in a gifted program, often times more than once, so anomalies would become evident over the course of time. But sometimes they can be used to detect learning disabilities or cognitive defects. So lying about your IQ to make you feel good makes as much sense as an oncologist telling you your tumor is harmless. What's more likely is the psychologist downplaying the importance of IQ and internet tests being less accurate for the reasons you've mentioned.

those are all good points..

although I don't think it takes an IQ of 110 to read and write on psych topics...does it?

An average of 110 still means there are people below this value. Those people are less likely to be vocal about their IQ too.
