Dx your pet!

Postby wineaux » Sun Nov 04, 2012 12:22 pm

so I was talking to a friend and making comments about my cat's peculiar behavior and he remarked that she might be BPD. And I was like, eureka! And my other cat is schizoid and my rabbit has schizophrenia. Anyone else? It could be fun....

My last cat was... clearly balls-to-the wall insane. I've never had to de-claw a cat before and am not fond of the practice, but after she decided to claw her way up my grandmother's leg at thanksgiving I decided she'd practiced her ninja skills enough and had it done. Otherwise, she might have killed us all in our sleep.

She would go completely nuts at night, running in circles around the room; which included running over the bed and me sleeping in it with each pass. I put a toy dangling off the ceiling over the bed at one point and she would constantly charge at it from the other end of the room, leap, overshoot it and smack face first into the wall.

I'm not even sure how to diagnose that.

Its funny you should say that cause my dog almost mimics the mood I am in. If I am anxious, he is staring at me, his breathing goes more shallow and can't focus really. And if I'm sad so is he and I am not crazy. People have noticed it without me bringing it.

And my mom's dog has a full on panic disorder. She goes into full on panic attack when she is nervous. Panting for like an hour, drooling and just going crazy. It's so hard to see cause there is nothing we can do for her. It isn't like we are gonna pop an ativan in her mouth, right? Hmmmm might be a thought though. JK

Funny - I've thought quite a few times now my dog could have BPD. When we leave him alone in the house, even if only for an hour or so, he acts like we've been gone for a year when we get back. He can act very moody and sometimes, he'll just lie down and look super sad. He craves love and is only at ease when someone's petting him or when he can lie against someone.
Always the years between us, Leonard. Always the years, always the love, always the hours.

Most of my dogs acted like they were ADHD... It was just crazy, they would never settle down. And to make it worse, they were tinny tea-cup chihuahuas.

My poor doggy definitely has PTSD. He is still petrified of hoses. When he was in the kennel, the staff wouldn't take the dogs out before cleaning it, so they'd stick the hose in the cage while he was in there and put it on full blast. He's sooo scared of them now. He also hates brooms. He is also afraid of anger and loud noises. That's probably partially my fault because of my fits of rage. But anyway, he runs and hides now when I'm in a mood BEFORE it gets that bad. Poor guy is just generally extremely anxious.
